ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Oneonta women's lacrosse team earned an 18-16 win over Canton on Saturday afternoon. Seniors Lindsey Townes (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) and Ellie Downey (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) each scored five goals as the Red Dragons move to 5-8 and 4-2 in the SUNYAC. The Roos fall to 5-8 and 1-5 in the conference.
Townes netted the first goal at 12:26 in the first quarter. Canton's Maddy Caron responded with a score ten seconds later to tie. Freshman Angelina Weinert (Levittown, NY/Division Avenue) scored with the player advantage at 8:33 to retake the lead, and goals from senior Elizabeth Doherty (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) and Downey made it 4-1. The Roos added a goal from Caroline Nappi before the second quarter, but senior Mason Benvenuto (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) found the back of the net with seven seconds left to take a 5-2 lead.
Townes scored Oneonta's first three goals of the second quarter to push the Red Dragons ahead 8-3. Benvenuto scored on a free position shot at 2:59, and senior Cassidy Moore (Hampton Bays, NY/Hampton Bays) gave Oneonta a 10-3 lead at 1:10.
Townes gave the Red Dragons an eight-goal lead early in the second half. Canton responded with a 6-0 run, with Caron scoring three times. Downey broke the streak with a goal at 5:22 to hold a 12-9 lead, but another two Canton goals made it a one-goal game. Downey scored with 32 seconds left to make it 13-11 heading into the fourth.
Canton tied for the first time since the first quarter after two consecutive goals from Olivia McCormick. Oneonta regained their offense afterward, and goals from Doherty, Weinert, and Downey pushed Oneonta up 16-13. McCormick scored again at 4:55, but goals from Downey and Weinert made it 18-14.
Canton closed out with two more goals, but Oneonta had the time advantage to secure the victory.
Weinert finished with three goals, while Doherty had two goals and an assist. Benvenuto scored twice, while Moore had a goal, three assists, and 16 draw controls. Junior Chelsea Dodenhoff (Islip Terrace, NY/East Islip) made three assists. Junior McKenzie Busch (Babylon, NY/Babylon Jr./Sr.) had seven ground balls.
Caron led Canton with five goals, eight draw controls, and an assist. McCormick scored four times.
Freshman Margot Haring (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks) made 11 saves in goal. Canton's Olivia Scott had 23 saves.
Oneonta next travels to face Buffalo State on Tues. Apr. 15 at 4 p.m.
