BUFFALO, N.Y. - Senior Cassidy Moore (Hampton Bays, NY/Hampton Bays) netted the game-winning goal with 1:26 left in overtime to give the Oneonta women's lacrosse team a 16-15 over Buffalo State on Tuesday afternoon. The Red Dragons move to 6-8 overall and 5-2 in the SUNYAC, while the Bengals fall to 11-4 and 5-2 in the conference.
Buffalo jumped out to a 4-0 lead, with Vanessa Willick netting two goals. Oneonta got on the board following an Elizabeth Doherty (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) goal at 6:14. Junior Lindsey Townes (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) scored to cut the lead to 5-2, but goals from Willick and Emilee Josker made it 7-2 heading into the second quarter.
After Lauren Rinow scored at 8:53, Oneonta scored four straight goals, with two coming from junior Ellie Downey (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon), to cut the lead to two at halftime.
Townes and Doherty scored the opening goals of the second half to tie 8-8. The Bengals used a 4-0 run to regain the lead at 12-8. Moore scored at 4:25, and Townes found the back of the net off a pass from Mason Benvenuto (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) to bring the Red Dragons within two. Buffalo State added two more before the fourth to extend its lead to 14-10.
Oneonta outscored Buffalo State 5-1 in the fourth. Townes scored on a free position at 4:26 to tie 15-15 to force overtime.
Moore won the draw control to start overtime, but the Bengals' goalkeepers stopped a shot from Doherty. Townes caused a turnover on the Buffalo State clear attempt and scooped up the ground ball. Moore scored at 1:26 to give Oneonta the win.
Townes led the team with five goals, four caused turnovers, and three ground balls. Moore added four goals, one assist, three ground balls, and seven draw controls. Downey finished with four goals and three ground balls, while Doherty had three goals, one assist, six ground balls, and seven draw controls. Senior Megan Hannon (Valley Cottage, N.Y./Nyack) and Benvenuto each had four caused turnovers.
Willick scored five times for the Bengals. Josker had four goals and nine ground balls, while Rinow had three goals and two assists. Sage Running Rabbit made six assists.
Oneonta returns home on Sat. Apr. 19 to play Fredonia at 12 p.m.
