ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Oneonta women's lacrosse team limited Fredonia to two second-half goals on the way to a 20-6 win on Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons have won four straight and move to 7-8 overall and 6-2 in the SUNYAC. Fredonia falls to 8-8 and 3-5 in the conference.
Fredonia took a 3-1 lead in the first following goals from Emma Cockerel and Megan Karalus. Senior Mason Benvenuto (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) started a 4-0 run to end the quarter with goals from senior Cassidy Moore (Hampton Bays, NY/Hampton Bays) and junior Chelsea Dodenhoff (Islip Terrace, NY/East Islip) to take a 5-3 lead.
The Blue Devils opened with a goal from Sydney Buchko to open the second quarter, but junior Lindsey Townes (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) found the back of the net to push the Oneonta lead to two. The Red Dragons scored five unanswered goals to end the half, with junior Grace Beattie (Windsor, NY/Windsor) scoring on a free position at 1:02 to take an 11-2 lead.
Oneonta continued to roll in the second half and scored three goals from senior Elizabeth Doherty (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place), Dodenhoff, and Moore in the opening two minutes. Fredonia scored its lone quarter goal at 10:41 from Emma Cockerel to make it 14-5. Oneonta added four more before the fourth to go ahead 18-5.
Benvenuto and freshman Angelina Weinert (Levittown, NY/Division Avenue) scored in the fourth to cap off the 20-6 game.
Moore led the way with ten points (five goals, five assists), eight draw controls, two caused turnovers, and three ground balls. Benvenuto had four goals and four ground balls, while Doherty finished with two goals and two assists. Senior Ellie Downey (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) had three goals and one assist. Townes finished with two goals.
Cockerel and Buchko each scored twice for the Blue Devils.
Freshman Margot Haring (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks) made two saves in goal, while senior Julia Hawkins (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) had three. Fredonia's Ashleigh Manns had nine stops.
Oneonta wraps up the regular season at New Paltz on Wed. Apr. 23 at 4 p.m.
