NEW PALTZ, N.Y. - The Oneonta women's lacrosse team fell 19-8 in the regular season finale at New Paltz on Wednesday afternoon. The Red Dragons secure the fourth seed of the SUNYAC Tournament at 7-9 overall and 6-3 in the conference. New Paltz is the third seed at 12-4 overall and 7-2 in the conference.
Senior Mason Benvenuto (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) scored first to open the game. The Hawks responded with an 8-0 run, with Lexi Atwater netting three goals. Senior Ellie Downey (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) scored at 1:41 in the first to cut the lead to 8-2.
New Paltz's Shannon Lewis scored to open the second quarter to push the lead to 9-3. Oneonta answered with goals from Elizabeth Doherty (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place), Chelsea Dodenhoff (Islip Terrace, NY/East Islip), and Lindsey Townes (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) to make it a four-goal game. The Hawks closed the half on a 3-0 run to lead 13-5 at the break.
New Paltz shut out Oneonta 6-0 in the third, with Morgan Atwater finding the back of the net three times. In the fourth, Townes scored at 12:38, and a goal from freshman Angelina Weinert (Levittown, NY/Division Avenue) made it 18-7. Doherty scored again before the final horn, but the Hawks grabbed the double-digit win.
Doherty led the team with two goals and an assist, while Townes scored twice.
L. Atwater scored six goals with one assist, while M. Atwater and Kaitlyn Shaw each had three goals. Ava Padilla dished out five assists.
Oneonta next plays in the SUNYAC Tournament First Round on Sat. Apr. 26 against Buffalo State at 1 p.m.
