ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Oneonta women's lacrosse team fell to Buffalo State in the first round of the SUNYAC Tournament on Saturday afternoon. The Bengals (12-6, 5-4 SUNYAC) outscored the Red Dragons (7-10. 6-3, SUNYAC) 7-1 in the fourth to advance to the semifinals at Oswego.
After trailing 3-0, Oneonta scored at 4:03 following a goal from senior Elizabeth Doherty (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place). The Red Dragons netted five unanswered goals to open the second quarter, with seniors Cassidy Moore (Hampton Bays, NY/Hampton Bays) and Ellie Downey (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) each scoring twice to take a 6-3 lead. Buffalo State's Vanessa Willick found the back of the net at 5:58 to cut the lead to two. Downey scored again at 2:42, and then two women-down goals from senior Elizabeth Doherty (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) and Moore made it 9-4 at halftime.
Willick scored the opening goal of the second half before Moore scored at 12:47 to make it 10-5. The Bengals went on a 3-0 run with two goals from Sage Running Rabbit to make it 10-8. Senior Mason Benvenuto (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) scored off a Doherty assist to hold an 11-8 lead, but Kira Grzechowiak scored the final goal of the third to cut the lead to two.
Buffalo State opened the fourth with a score from Anna Cinquino to pull within one. Benvenuto found the back of the net to bring the lead up to 12-10. The Bengals' offense rolled afterward and closed the game on a 6-0 run.
Moore led Oneonta with six points on four goals, two assists, and five draw controls. Doherty added three goals, two assists, and four draw controls. Downey had three goals, while Benvenuto scored twice.
Willick had six goals and two assists. Running Rabbit had two goals and two assists, while Grzechowiak had three goals.
Sophomore Margot Haring (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks) made 12 saves in goal, and Moira Penot made two stops.
