MORRISVILLE, N.Y. - The Oneonta women's lacrosse team scored ten first-quarter goals on the way to a 29-7 SUNYAC victory over Morrisville on Saturday afternoon. Senior Lindsey Townes (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) netted seven goals to help the Red Dragons move to 2-5 overall and 1-0 in the SUNYAC. The Mustangs fall to 0-2 and 0-1 in the conference.
After a slow start, Oneonta scored at 10:27 with a goal from senior Mason Benvenuto (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook). Senior Cassidy Moore (Hampton Bays, NY/Hampton Bays) netted a goal at 8:54, but Morrisville scored from Anyssia Ingersoll 20 seconds later to make it 2-1. Oneonta netted the following four goals to push the lead to 6-1. Townes scored at 3:05 and 2:21 to make it 9-2 before a goal from Ingersoll cut the lead to six. Freshman Angelina Weinert (Levittown, NY/Division Avenue) made it 10-3 heading into the second quarter.
Oneonta outscored Morrisville 7-3 in the second quarter. Townes opened with a goal at 14:17, and Benvenuto scored two straight goals to start a 5-0 run. Another goal from Townes at 1:03 pushed the Red Dragons ahead 17-5.
Oneonta went 12-1 over Morrisville in the second half, with a fourth-quarter shutout of the Mustangs.
Townes finished with seven goals and four assists, while senior Ellie Downey (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) had five goals and three assists. Moore and Elizabeth Doherty (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) had four goals and three assists each, with Moore winning 15 draw controls. Junior Chelsea Dodenhoff (Islip Terrace, NY/East Islip) had two goals and three assists. Benvenuto added four goals.
Ingersoll led Morrisville with four goals and an assist.
Senior Julia Hawkins (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) made three saves in goal, while Aniyah Smith had eight.
Oneonta next travels to face Hartwick on Wed. Mar. 26 at 4 p.m.
