ONEONTA, N.Y. - Hartwick's Sofia Jaworovich scored the game-winning goal with nine seconds left to give the Hawks a 17-16 win over the Oneonta women's lacrosse team on Wednesday evening. Oneonta falls to 2-6 overall, while Hartwick moves to 2-4.
Oneonta struck first, with senior Elizabeth Doherty (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) scoring at 13:10. Hartwick responded with goals from Parker Laurin and Kara Anderson to go up 2-1. Doherty scored again at 4:50 to spur a 4-0 Red Dragons' run with goals from Lindsey Townes (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown), Marissa Vallese (Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City), and Cassidy Moore (Hampton Bays, NY/Hampton Bays). Anderson netted another goal with 25 seconds left in the first to make it 5-3 at the break.
Hartwick outscored Oneonta 5-2 in the second quarter, with Laurin scoring three more times.
Senior Ellie Downey (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) scored a man-up goal at 12:07 to tie 8-8. Hartwick quickly retook the lead before Downey and junior Chelsea Dodenhoff (Islip Terrace, NY/East Islip) scored to take a 10-9 lead late in the third. Kristen Vaccarelli scored for the Hawks to make it a tie game heading into the fourth.
Hartwick scored twice in the opening minute of the fourth before Downey cut the lead to 12-11. The Hawks built a 14-12 lead, but Doherty and Moore scored back-to-back to tie 14-14. Another Hawks' lead followed but two goals from Townes made it 16-16 with 2:20 remaining. Hartwick won the final draw control, and Jaworovich netted the game-winning with nine seconds left.
Townes led the team with five goals, while Downey had four goals and three assists. Doherty had three goals and three assists, while Moore finished with two goals, one assist, and seven draw controls.
Vaccarelli led all scorers with eight goals and two assists, while Laurin scored five.
Freshman Margot Haring (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks) made ten saves in goal, and Brooke Lynett had 12.
