ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Oneonta women's lacrosse team shut out Rochester 2-0 in the fourth quarter but ultimately fell 12-10 to Rochester on Tuesday afternoon. The Red Dragons fall to 1-5 overall, while the Yellowjackets move to 3-2.
Rochester jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first following goals from Kassi Boehl, Gracie Giannettino, and Sara Mendelson. Oneonta scored with 20 seconds remaining in the first, with senior Elizabeth Doherty (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) netting a free position goal to make it 3-1.
Oneonta cut the lead to one with senior Ellie Downey (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) scoring on a pass from senior Mason Benvenuto (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) at 12:51. Rochester responded with two goals within 30 seconds to take a 5-2 lead at 9:54. Senior Cassidy Moore (Hampton Bays, NY/Hampton Bays) netted a goal at 6:13 before another two Yellowjackets' goals made it 7-3. Moore scored again at 2:13, but Alyssa Gorny found the back of the net with six seconds before halftime to take an 8-4 lead.
Moore scored her third goal to start the second half, but Rochester built a 10-5 lead. Junior Lindsey Townes (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) scored on a free position at 9:53 and again at 6:47 to make it 11-7. Another Moore free position goal at 5:58 kept the score within four.
Both defenses locked down in the fourth, but Oneonta broke through at 4:44 with freshman Marissa Vallese (Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City) scoring a Moore assist. Townes cut the lead to two goals at 2:08, but that proved to be the game's last score.
Moore finished with four goals, one assist, and three draw controls. Townes added three goals and one assist. Doherty had a goal and two assists. Sophomore Emma Furze (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) grabbed three ground balls and caused two turnovers.
Giannettino led Rochester with five goals, while Gorny and Jenna Ufberg each had two goals.
Freshman Margot Haring (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks) made 12 saves in goal. Isla Ablin had 12 saves for Rochester.
Oneonta next opens SUNYAC play at Morrisville on Sat. Mar. 22 at 1 p.m.
