PANAMA CITY, FL - Ten different Red Dragons found the back of the net as the Oneonta women's lacrosse team picked up a 22-1 win over New England College on Thursday evening. Oneonta picks up its first win and moves to 1-4 overall, while the Pilgrims fall to 3-3.
Oneonta scored eight first-quarter goals, with senior Mason Benvenuto (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) scoring first at 12:57. Senior Cassidy Moore (Hampton Bays, NY/Hampton Bays) scored 40 seconds later to go ahead 2-0. Senior Ellie Downey (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) and Moore scored in the eighth minute before freshman Angelina Weinert (Levittown, NY/Division Avenue) pushed the lead to 5-0 at 6:16. Moore scored on a free position at 4:33, and senior Lindsey Townes (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) closed out the first quarter with two consecutive goals.
New England College netted its lone goal in the second quarter, with Lucy Armour scoring on a free position at 14:30. Benvenuto scored her second goal at 13:45 before senior Alexandria Pohl (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) scored her first goal of the season at 12:40.
Goals from senior Elizabeth Doherty (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) and junior Grace Beattie (Windsor, NY/Windsor) pushed the lead to 12-1 to force a running clock. Back-to-back goals from junior Chelsea Dodenhoff (Islip Terrace, NY/East Islip) made it 15-1 at halftime.
Oneonta shut out New England 7-0 in the second half, with Weinert netting three more goals and freshman Marissa Vallese (Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City) netting her first-career goal at 8:26.
Weinert led the team with four goals and added two groundballs and two draw controls. Moore finished with three goals, two assists, and four draw controls. Townes and Dodenhoff each had three goals.
Freshman goalies Margot Haring (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks) made one save, while senior Julia Hawkins (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) had two.
New England's Isabella Marzano had six saves in goal.
Oneonta returns north to play at Rochester on Tue. Mar. 18 at 4 p.m.
