OSWEGO, N.Y. - The Oneonta women's volleyball team fell in four sets to Oswego on Saturday afternoon. The Lakers (13-3, 2-0 SUNYAC) took the first two sets, 26-24 and 25-21, before the Red Dragons (11-7, 1-1 SUNYAC) won the third set, 25-19. Oswego wrapped up with a 25-18 fourth-set victory.
Oneonta opened on a 6-0 run to start the first set with senior Colleen McCabe (Rockville Centre, NY/Oceanside) and junior Emma Morretta (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) knocking in kills. The Red Dragons extended to a 9-4 lead following another McCabe kill before Oswego went on a 4-0 run with Kalley Vugteveen tallying three kills. Two kills from freshman Layla Pertchik (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) and another two by junior Keira Welsh (Patchogue, NY/Patchogue-Medford) made it 15-9. Oswego used a 5-0 run to pull within two. Three more Lakers' kills gave Oswego its first lead at 21-20. Oneonta tied 24-24 following a pair of attack errors before the Lakers won the set on a Vugteveen ace.
Oneonta took a 5-3 lead in the third with kills from Morretta and senior Mikayla Kendrick (Nassau, NY/Columbia). A 5-0 Oneonta run, comprised of kills from Welsh and Morretta and an ace from sophomore Shea Landversicht (Greenville, NY/Greenville), made it 12-7. Two kills by Landversicht made it 23-14, but a 5-0 Oswego run cut the lead to four. Oneonta closed out with two points, with Welsh knocking in the final kill.
The Lakers took a 17-10 lead in the fourth. Oswego added three kills to take a nine-point lead. Welsh started a 6-0 run with a kill and two Landversicht aces, cutting the lead to 20-16. Oswego finished on a 3-0 run with Juliana Santafernia recording the match-winning ace.
Welsh led Oneonta with 13 kills and added four digs. Landversicht finished with 11 kills, five aces, and six blocks. McCabe recorded ten kills and four digs. Senior Anna Moller (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach Senior) finished with 24 digs, while Pertchik made 38 assists.
Vugteveen tallied a match-high 17 kills, while Priscilla McReynolds tallied 12 kills and 17 digs. Mya Bush recorded 46 assists.
Oneonta returns home to host Cortland on Friday, October 10, at 6 p.m.
