Oneonta Swept By Cortland In Battle of Red Dragons

ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Oneonta women's volleyball team fell 3-0 to visiting Cortland in SUNYAC play on Friday evening. Oneonta falls to 11-8 overall and 1-2 in the SUNYAC, while Cortland moves to 14-4 and 3-0 in the conference.

Cortland swept sets 25-18, 25-11, and 25-18.

Oneonta took a 6-5 lead in the first set following a 3-0 run with a kill from sophomore Shea Landversicht (Greenville, NY/Greenville) and an ace by senior Colleen McCabe (Rockville Centre, NY/Oceanside). Cortland went 5-1 to go ahead 15-10. Oneonta cut the lead to two with two McCabe kills and an ace from senior Anna Moller (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach Senior). Junior Emma Morretta (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) knocked in a kill to make it 23-18, but Cortland kills from Sanaiya Whitted and Kira Pirrera won the set.

Cortland jumped ahead 12-5 in the second. Freshman Layla Pertchik (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) snuck in a kill to cut the lead to 14-7. Cortland went on a 6-1 span to pull ahead 21-9 as Oneonta struggled to find its offense.

Cortland controlled the third set and led 15-6. A kill and ace by McCabe cut the lead to six. Pirrera knocked in a kill to make it 24-16. Freshman Corynna Manjos (Maplewood, NJ/Columbia) tallied a kill and an error, making it 24-18 before Pirrera sent in the match-winning kill.  

McCabe led Oneonta with seven kills and two aces, while Morretta added four kills. Pertchik made 16 assists, and Moller made 17 digs.

Pirrera led the match with 19 kills, and Emalee Ballou had ten. Melissa O'Connor had 19 assists.

Oneonta is back on Saturday, October 11, to face Morrisville at 1 p.m.
