ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Oneonta women's volleyball team fell short to visiting Morrisville on Saturday afternoon, losing in five sets to the Mustangs. Oneonta (11-9, 1-3 SUNYAC) fell to Morrisville (10-8, 2-2 SUNYAC) 25-16 in the first set before winning 25-17 and 25-20 in the second and third sets. The Mustangs took the final sets 25-19 and 18-16.
The Mustangs used an 11-2 span in the first set to take a 14-6 lead. Kills from senior Colleen McCabe (Rockville Centre, NY/Oceanside) and sophomore Shea Landversicht (Greenville, NY/Greenville) brought the score within five. Landversicht knocked in two consecutive kills to make it 16-12. A 5-0 Mustangs' run pushed the lead to 22-14 before Morrisville took three of the final four points.
Oneonta rebounded in the second with senior Anna Moller (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach Senior) hitting an ace before a pair of McCabe kills to make it 6-4. The Mustangs went on a 3-0 run before the Red Dragons used a 4-0 span with kills from senior Sabrina Squicciarini (Manorville, NY/St. Anthony's) and Landversicht. Freshman Cadence Meltz (Highland, NY/Highland) tallied an ace to make it 13-10, and a 5-0 Oneonta run pushed the lead to seven. Freshman Corynna Manjos (Maplewood, NJ/Columbia) knocked in a kill, and a Mustang error tied sets 1-1.
Oneonta went ahead 15-8 after a kill by junior Emma Morretta (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) and an ace by freshman Layla Pertchik (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs). Meltz recorded an ace to push Oneonta up 22-14. Morrisville kills by Mary Trowbridge cut the lead to five. Morretta knocked in an ace to make it 24-19 before a service error gave Oneonta a 2-1 lead.
Morrisville went ahead 16-9 in the fourth after kills from Trowbridge and Isabelle Eskierka. Morretta tallied a kill to pull the Red Dragons within five, but the Mustangs rattled off three straight points to go up 20-12. A kill from freshman Addison Tanton (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) spurred a 4-0 Oneonta run to make it 23-19, but Morrisville took the final two points to force a fifth set.
Oneonta took an 11-10 lead in the fifth after a kill from senior Mikayla Kendrick (Nassau, NY/Columbia). The points went back-and-forth until the Red Dragons recorded a kill from McCabe to go up 16-15. The Mustangs closed out on a 3-0 run with Trowbridge knocking in the match-winning kill.
Moretta finished with 13 kills, while Landverischt added ten kills and six blocks. McCabe added nine kills and two blocks. Moller had three aces and 24 digs, and Kendrick had two aces and 19 digs. Pertchik made 22 assists, and Tanton had 14.
Eskierka had a match-high 18 kills, and Trowbridge had 11. Cassandra Belmore recorded 24 assists, and Keely Shearer had 17 digs.
Oneonta next hosts Plattsburgh on Friday, October 17, at 6 p.m.
