Red Dragons Sweep Lakers for Sixth Straight Win

ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Oneonta women's volleyball team wrapped up an undefeated weekend with a 3-0 sweep against Oswego on Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons have won six straight matches and now stand at 9-10 overall and 5-0 in the SUNYAC. The Lakers fall to 7-12 and 1-4 in the conference.

Oneonta won in straight sets, 26-24, 25-22, and 25-21.

After Oswego built a 6-4 lead in the first set, Oneonta tied it after two Lakers' errors. Sophomore Cadence Meltz (Highland, NY/Highland) served an ace, and senior Keira Welsh (Patchogue, NY/Patchogue-Medford) hit a kill to take a 10-7 lead. Kills from Welsh and sophomore Layla Pertchik (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs), plus a block by Welsh and senior Emma Morretta (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac), pushed Oneonta to 13-9. The Lakers fought back to take a 20-19 lead after Chloe Arnaiz scored two kills. The set stayed back and forth until Oswego took a 24-23 lead. Oneonta closed out on a 3-0 run with sophomore Corynna Manjos (Maplewood, NJ/Columbia) hitting a kill to make it 1-0.

Oneonta used a 3-0 span, capped by a Welsh kill, to take a 9-8 lead in the second set. Oswego regained an 11-10 lead after an ace from Lilaina Nelson, but Oneonta rattled off four straight points, with senior Lillian Slattery (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) adding an ace to make it 14-11. The Red Dragons held a narrow lead before Pertchik snuck in the set-winning kill to push Oneonta up 2-0.

The Red Dragons fell behind 12-10 in the third, but Manjos and Morretta sent in kills to retake the lead, 13-12. Sophomore Lily Pugliese (Hopewell Junction, NY/John Jay) added a pair of kills to make it 17-14, and a kill from junior Shea Landversicht (Greenville, NY/Greenville) gave Oneonta a four-point lead. The Red Dragons completed the sweep with kills from Morretta and Manjos.

Welsh and Manjos finished with nine kills each, while Pugliese had eight. Senior Abby Stevens (Otisville, NY/Minisink Valley) had two aces and 12 digs. Pertchik finished with 34 assists, and Slattery collected 18 digs.

Oneonta next faces Buffalo State on Friday, October 30, at 6 p.m.
