BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Buffalo State Bengals swept the Oneonta women's volleyball team 3-0 in SUNYAC play on Friday evening. The Bengals won 25-19, 25-20, and 25-21 to improve to 13-13 overall and 5-3 in the SUNYAC. The Red Dragons fall to 15-11 and 4-4 in the conference.
Oneonta took a 4-1 lead in the first with kills from freshman Lily Pugliese (Hopewell Junction, NY/John Jay) and senior Mikayla Kendrick (Nassau, NY/Columbia). Buffalo State responded with a 3-0 run until kills from junior Emma Morretta (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) and Kendrick brought the Red Dragons' lead to 6-4. The Bengals used another 3-0 run to go ahead 8-7, and the team traded leads until a Kendrick kill made it 14-12. Neither side pulled away, and Pugliese knocked in a kill to tie 18-18. Buffalo State closed out on a 7-1 run to take the first set.
Oneonta and Buffalo State traded leads in the second set until an ace and kill from Kendrick pushed the Red Dragons ahead 16-14. Oneonta held a two-point lead until the Bengals went on a 5-0 run with two aces from Ella Wittman. The Red Dragons pulled within two before the Bengals finished the set, going 4-1.
Oneonta went up 6-1 in the third. The Red Dragons continued to hold the lead with Morretta knocking in a kill to make it 12-7. Buffalo State scored three unanswered, with Wittman tallying two more aces. Kills from senior Colleen McCabe (Rockville Centre, NY/Oceanside) and junior Keira Welsh (Patchogue, NY/Patchogue-Medford) brought the Oneonta lead to 15-11. The Bengals went on a 5-1 span to tie at 17-17. Sophomore Shea Landversicht (Greenville, NY/Greenville) hit a kill, and a bad set gave Oneonta a 19-17 advantage. The Red Dragons took a 21-20 lead before Buffalo State closed out on a 5-0 run.
Pugliese led Oneonta with nine kills, while Morretta had seven. Freshman Layla Pertchik (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) recorded two aces, ten digs, and 26 assists. Freshman Cadence Meltz (Highland, NY/Highland) finished with ten digs.
Wittman led Buffalo State with 14 kills, seven aces, 12 digs, and a block. Nicole Celli COlli added seven kills, and Karlie Shaffer recorded 18 assists.
Oneonta next plays at Fredonia on Saturday, November 1, at 1 p.m.
