FREDONIA, N.Y. - The Oneonta women's volleyball team fell 3-1 to Fredonia on Saturday afternoon to close out SUNYAC action. The Red Dragons fall to 15-12 overall and 4-5 in the SUNYAC, while the Blue Devils move to 10-13 and 6-3 in the conference.
Fredonia won the first set 25-21 before Oneonta took the second 31-29. The Blue Devils then closed out with 25-17 and 25-20 wins.
After dropping the first set, Oneonta battled back in the second. The Red Dragons took a 6-2 lead, and then sophomore Shea Landversicht (Greenville, NY/Greenville) blocked an attack to push the lead to 8-5. A kill from Emma Foley followed by a Red Dragons attack error brought the score within one before Oneonta used a 4-0 run to go up 12-7. Oneonta continued to hold a narrow lead until Fredonia's Hannah Lombardi knocked in a kill to cut the lead to 18-17. A 3-0 span, capped off with a kill from freshman Layla Pertchik (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs), put the Red Dragons up 21-17. Fredonia went on a 5-0 run to take the lead, and the teams traded points until the Blue Devils took a 29-28 lead. Pertchik sent in another kill, and two Fredonia errors tied the sets 1-1.
Oneonta cut the lead to 17-14 in the third after a block from sophomore Addison Tanton (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) and Landversicht. Kills from Landversicht and junior Keira Welsh (Patchogue, NY/Patchogue-Medford) made it 19-16 before a 4-0 Fredonia run. Oneonta scored on an attack to cut the lead to six, but the Blue Devils scored two straight to go up 2-1.
Oneonta tied in the fourth following a 4-0 run with kills from seniors Mikayla Kendrick (Nassau, NY/Columbia), Colleen McCabe (Rockville Centre, NY/Oceanside), and Landversicht. Fredonia pulled away 18-16, but two kills by freshman Lily Pugliese (Hopewell Junction, NY/John Jay) tied 18-18. The Blue Devils rattled off four straight and then closed out on a 3-0 run to earn the match victory.
McCabe led the team with 12 kills and added three blocks. Welsh added nine kills, while Pugliese had eight. Landversicht finished with four blocks, and Pertchik made 26 assists. Senior Anna Moller (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach Senior) recorded 18 digs.
Oneonta closes out the regular season on Saturday, November 8, against Bard.
