CANTON, N.Y. - Senior Colleen McCabe (Rockville Centre, NY/Oceanside) tallied a career-high 13 kills on .542 hitting to help the Oneonta women's volleyball team sweep Canton 3-0 on Friday evening. Oneonta won 25-19, 25-22, and 26-24. The Red Dragons move to 11-6 overall and 1-0 in the SUNYAC, while the Roos fall to 7-12 and 0-1 in the conference. Â
Canton took a 10-9 lead in the first before a kill from McCabe and a block by senior Mikayla Kendrick (Nassau, NY/Columbia) and sophomore Shea Landversicht (Greenville, NY/Greenville) put Oneonta up 11-10. A 3-0 run gave the Red Dragons a 14-11. The Roos tied 14-14 after kills from Lauren Norman, McKenna Pelech, and Brooke Hite. The teams traded leads until Oneonta closed out the set on a 6-0 run.
Canton jumped ahead 5-1 in the second. A McCabe kill and an ace from senior Anna Moler cut the lead to one. Kills from Landversicht and freshman Layal Pertchik and an ace from junior Lillian Slattery (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) gave Oneonta an 8-7 lead. The Red Dragons pulled ahead 15-12 following kills from McCabe and Landversicht. Canton used a 4-0 run to tie 20-20, and an ace by Emerson Coulter made it 22-21. Junior Keira Welsh (Patchogue, NY/Patchogue-Medford) knocked in a kill to start a 4-0 run with McCabe sending in the final two kills.
A 5-1 span in the third set gave Canton a 16-12 lead. Kendrick hit a kill, and McCabe grabbed an ace to cut the lead to two. The Roos continued to hold a lead until junior Emma Morretta (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) recorded a kill to spur a 4-0 run and take a 22-21 lead. Oneonta took four of the final five points to complete the sweep.
McCabe led the team with 13 kills and added four digs and two blocks. Landversicht added seven kills and four blocks, while Morretta had five kills and five blocks. Moller finished with 24 digs and two aces, while Pertchik made 28 assists.
Coulter led Canton with 13 kills and added ten digs. Hite finished with eight kills. Nadia Frigon finished with 21 assists and 11 digs.
Oneonta next plays at Oswego on Saturday, October 4 at 1 p.m.
