FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Oneonta men's soccer team found the back of the net in the final minute of play to pick up a 1-0 SUNYAC victory on the road against Fredonia, Saturday afternoon. Sophomore
Tommy Kliampas (South Huntington, NY/Walt Whitman) recorded a goal in his third straight game and scored the game-winning goal just as the clock went into the 90th minute with an assist from senior
Luigi Prosperi (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook). Junior
James Cintron (Poughkeepsie, NY/Roy C. Ketcham) finished with three saves and recorded his fifth shutout of the season as the Red Dragons improved to 8-3-2 on the season, 3-1-1 in the SUNYAC, and the Blue Devils dropped to 5-5-3 overall and 2-3-0 in conference play.
"Fredonia defended well and that's a tough way to lose, but we upped the pressure in the second half, and we finally got our reward at the death," head coach
Iain Byrne commented.
At 89:01, Oneonta gained possession at midfield when senior
Dillon Kelly (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Beacon) was the first to the ball off Fredonia's goal kick. Kelly got the ball back and he headed it to Prosperi, who settled the ball and passed it to Kliampas. The sophomore forward got the ball from 25 yards out, brought the ball to the top of the box and fired a shot between the Blue Devils keeper and the right-side post. The goal was Kliampas' eighth of the season, which is now the second most in the SUNYAC, and it was Prosperi's third assist of the year.
Cintron made his first save in the 12th minute of play against Thomas Borg, then he was challenged again in the 29th minute by Chance Lacroix, but he made an impressive stop to keep the game scoreless. The junior's final save happened in the 55th minute on Kyle Castelluccio's shot.
Thomas McDonald finished with 16 saves for the Blue Devils.
Oneonta outshot Fredonia 27-9 in overall shots, 17-3 in shots on net, and they had a 13-2 advantage in corner kicks. Senior
Zach Rabadi (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) recorded four shots on goal, while Kelly had three shots on target and senior
Milton Mancias Magana (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) and freshman
Noah Hechler (Somers, NY/Somers) each had two.
The Red Dragons return to the pitch on Wednesday, October 15, for a SUNYAC match against Buffalo State at 4 pm on Red Dragon Field.
