SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - The Oneonta women's volleyball team wrapped up the Skidmore Classic going 1-1 on the day. The Red Dragons move to 4-3 overall following a 3-1 win over Nazareth and a 3-0 loss to Williams. Junior Anna Moller (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach Senior High School) was selected to the All-Tournament team for her performances.
Oneonta 3, Nazareth 1
Oneonta took the first two sets 25-18 and 25-18 before falling 25-16 in the third. The Red Dragons finished Nazareth off in the fourth set, 25-19. A pair of blocks from sophomore Emma Moretta and a McKenna Law (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills Ballston Lake) kill pushed the Red Dragons ahead 6-3 in the first set. The Golden Flyers cut the lead to one before junior Katie Spano (Dryden, NY/Dryden) knocked in a kill. Sophomore Keira Welsh (Patchogue, NY/Patchogue-Medford High School) followed with a pair of kills to make it 11-7. Kills from freshman Hailey Herrera (Brooklyn, NY/) and Law put Oneonta ahead 16-11. Nazareth cut the lead to four off a Leah Fusilli kill, but Oneonta responded with a 3-0 span with kills from Moretta and Welsh and an ace by freshman Abigail Harper (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) to get to 24-17. Morretta knocked in the set-winning kill to take a 1-0 lead.
After the Golden Flyers' Lorianna Mattutat and Liz Moran blocked a Oneonta attack to lead 3-2, the Red Dragons rattled off a 6-0 run with Welsh, Law, Morretta, and Herrera kills.
Law hit another kill, and Morretta followed with an ace to go up 10-4. Spano then blocked a Zoe Tylipakis attack to push the advantage to seven. The Golden Flyers chipped away at the lead, with Fusilli tallying a kill and capitalizing on two bad sets to make it 12-9. A 6-1 Oneonta span capped off with a Moretta point sent the score to 20-12. Spano struck back-to-back kills to reach 24-14, and a Nazareth error put the Red Dragons up 2-0.
The Golden Flyers opened with four straight points to start the third set and led 6-1 following a Ruth Jackson kill. Oneonta used a 5-0 run with two Law kills to tie 10-10, but Nazareth continued to build a narrow lead. An 8-0 Golden Flyers' run with four Hailey Trank aces pushed the lead to 24-14. A final kill from Tylipakis made the sets 2-1.
Nazareth took a 12-8 lead in the fourth before Oneonta went on an 8-0 run with kills from Herrera, Colleen McCabe (Rockville Centre, NY/Oceanside), and Morretta. The Red Dragons rose 22-16 following a Spano kill and block. Oneonta closed out with a Morretta kill and a block assist from McCabe and Morretta to secure the match victory.
Law finished with 15 kills on .538 hitting, while Spano added ten kills and seven total blocks on .667 hitting. Morretta tacked on nine kills and an ace. Moller finished with 19 digs, and Herrera made 33 assists.
Tylipakis and Fusilli had 12 kills each, while Jackson finished with nine. Fusilli grabbed 15 digs, and Ella Kules made 33 assists.
William 3, Oneonta 0
Williams took a 5-2 lead to start the first set before junior Anna Moller (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach Senior High School) snuck in an ace, and Law hit an ace to tie 5-5. The Ephs responded with a 5-0 run capped off with a kill from Keely Campuzano. Oneonta used a 5-0 run with a Morretta ace and two Welsh kills to take a 14-13 lead. The set remained close, and Oneonta tied 19-19 off a bad Williams set. A kill by Chi Obi and two from Annaliese Fricke made it 24-19 for the Ephs. Obi knocked in the final kill to go up 1-0.
Williams used a 6-0 run to pull away 9-3 in the second set, and Oneonta struggled to get back in. A block assist from Keely Campuzano and Maya Thompson made it 16-7. Blocks from Spano and Law brought Oneonta within six points, and a Zoe Moller (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) ace followed by another Spano block made it 17-13. Obi sent in a kill to make it 22-15, and three unanswered points close out the set.
Oneonta kept the third set close and tied 11-11 after a Williams attack error. A 6-1 Ephs' run brought the score to 17-12. Oneonta managed to pull within four following a Law kill, but Sabina Lum knocked in the match-winning kill.
Oneonta returns home to host Keystone on Wed. Sept. 11 at 6 p.m.
