PITTSFORD, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta field hockey team fell on the road against St. John Fisher, 4-2, Saturday afternoon. Oneonta was ahead 1-0 going into halftime then St. John Fisher managed to score three goals in the third period to take the lead for the remainder of the game. Senior
Caitlyn Caulfield (Albany, N.Y./Guilderland) and freshman
Skyler Van Wormer (Guilderland, N.Y./Guilderland) recorded the goals for the Red Dragons as the team moved to 3-2 this season while the Cardinals improved to 2-4 overall.
Following a scoreless first period, Oneonta scored the first goal of the game off a penalty corner play with 22 seconds left in the half. Sophomore
Abigail Draper (Remsen, NY/Holland Patent) hit the ball out towards graduate student
Erin Clark (Somers, N.Y./Somers), who gave a quick pass to
Michaela Maniscalco (Northport, N.Y./Northport). Maniscalco took a couple steps towards the cage and passed it near the left side post to Draper, who redirected the ball to the other side of the cage to Van Wormer for the goal.
St. John Fisher scored three goals in the third period to take a 3-1 lead. Audrey Grieb recorded the first two goals before Molly Fisher tallied the third. The Cardinals were looking to go up 4-1 with a penalty shot at 47:01, but junior
Maura Leib (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse Minoa) made the crucial save. A few minutes later at 52:38, the Red Dragons had a penalty shot opportunity of their own where Caulfield took the shot and fired the ball into the left side of the cage to make it a 3-2 game.
Oneonta had a chance to tie the game in the closing minutes when Clark took a shot from the top of the shooting circle and had it redirected off a stick towards the cage, but it quickly bounced out of play past the right post just before Van Wormer could knock it in. Mary Kate McPhee scored one more goal for the Cardinals with 30 seconds remaining.
Leib finished with seven saves for the Red Dragons. Morgan Parrinello played 30 minutes in net for St. John Fisher and recorded eight saves while Senha Matson played the other 30 and had one save.
The Cardinals outshot the Red Dragons 22-19, 12-11 on target, however Oneonta had a 22-10 advantage in penalty corners.
The Red Dragons' next game is on Wednesday, September 18, when they travel to take on Wilkes University at 6 pm.
