BUFFALO, N.Y. -Â The Oneonta women's lacrosse team ended the game on a 6-0 run, but it was not enough as the Red Dragons fell 17-15 to Buffalo State on Saturday afternoon. Oneonta falls to 3-7 and 1-3 in the SUNYAC, while Buffalo State moves to 6-3 and 2-1 in the conference.Â
The Bengals scored two quick goals from Vanessa Willick to go ahead 2-0 before senior Margaret Byrne (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) scored at 9:50 to cut the lead to one. The Bengals answered with two more goals before senior Lauren Mancini (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) found the back of the net at 5:24. After senior Marissa Evans (Jamesville, NY/LaFayette) won the draw control, she scored at 3:24 to make it 5-3. Buffalo State closed out the first quarter with two goals to hold a 7-3 lead.Â
Oneonta started hot in the second quarter with three consecutive goals, with two coming from junior Ellie Downey (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon). The Bengals rattled off three straight from Willick to push ahead 10-6 before Bryne scored a woman-up goal at 2:18 off an assist from Lindsay Townes. Willick scored once more before the half to give the Bengals an 11-7 advantage at the break.Â
The Bengals built their lead to 16-9 in the third as Buffalo State outscored Oneonta 5-2.Â
Buffalo State's Emilee Josker scored at 11:15 in the fourth quarter to push the Bengals up 17-9. Downey scored at 9:45 on a pass from Cassidy Moore (Hampton Bays, NY/Hampton Bays), and Moore followed with a pair of goals to make it 17-12. Evans added two scores before Mancini added another with 32 seconds to cut the lead to 17-15. Time was not on the Red Dragons' side, as the Bengals held out.
Mancini tallied four goals, while Moore had two goals and two assists. Evans finished with three goals.Â
Willick scored a game-high eight goals and eight draw controls, while Josker, Sarah Fineour, and Rinow had two goals.Â
Oneonta is back home on Wed. Apr. 10 to face Cortland at 4 p.m.
