GENESEO, N.Y. -Â The Geneseo Knights used a 7-0 first quarter to secure and hold on to an eventual 19-8 win over the Oneonta women's lacrosse team on Friday afternoon. The Red Dragons fall to 3-6 overall and 1-1 in the SUNYAC, while the Knights move to 6-3 and 1-1 in the conference.Â
Geneseo shut out Oneonta in the first quarter, and Alaina Reina scored three goals. Oneonta got on the board when junior Ellie Downey (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) picked up junior Cassidy Moore (Hampton Bays, NY/Hampton Bays) at 14:15 in the second quarter. The Knights responded with goals from Maira Brennan and Molly Brown. Moore scored her second goal at 2:30 to cut the lead to 9-2.Â
The Oneonta offense picked up in the second half after another two Geneseo goals made it 11-2. Senior Marissa Evans (Jamesville, NY/LaFayette) found the back of the net at 11:05, and the Red Dragons scored four straight goals from senior Lauren Mancini (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place), Elizabeth Doherty (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place), and Moore to make it 12-7. Geneseo scored once more before the end of the third to lead by six.Â
Moore scored her fifth goal less than a minute into the fourth to make it 13-8. Afterward, Geneseo shut down Oneonta, going on a 6-0 run to end the game.Â
Moore led Oneonta with five goals and three draw controls, while Evans had a goal and an assist. Downey made two assists.Â
Reina and Brown finished with eight points (six goals, two assists). Maddie Brown added two goals and three assists.Â
Courtney Gallagher (Montrose, NY/Hendrick Hudson) made 17 saves in goal, while Holly Indelicato had two saves.
Oneonta looks to bounce back when they travel to face Buffalo State on Sat. Apr. 6 at 2 p.m.
