ONEONTA, N.Y. -Â The Oneonta women's lacrosse team dropped a 13-9 decision to New Paltz to wrap up the regular season on Wednesday afternoon. Despite the loss, the Red Dragons (5-11, 3-6 SUNYAC) clinch the sixth seed in the SUNYAC Tournament and will face the Hawks (13-3, 5-3 SUNYAC) in the first round on Sat. Apr. 27 at 11 a.m.
The first half was evenly matched, and Oneonta took a 2-0 lead following two goals from junior Cassidy Moore (Hampton Bays, NY/Hampton Bays). New Paltz responded with a Morgan Atwater goal at 11:00, and Lexi Atwater scored at 5:20 to tie 2-2.Â
Moore caused a turnover in the second quarter, scooped up the ground ball, and scored at 11:41 to take a 3-2 lead. The Hawks answered immediately, with Kaitlyn Shaw netting the equalizer at 10:09. Another goal from M. Atwater on a free position gave the Hawks their first lead at 7:48, but senior Lauren Mancini (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) found the back of the net before the end of the half to make it 4-4.Â
New Paltz exploded for five straight goals to open the second half to take a 9-5 lead before senior Jacklyn Jackowski broke the streak at 10:16 off a Mancini assist. New Paltz's Kira Tucker tacked on a goal at 6:51 to take a five-goal lead, but senior Ana Stiso (Latham, NY/Shaker) added a score at 5:07. The Hawks made it 11-6 before the fourth following another goal from M. Atwater.Â
Kaitlyn Shaw and Mia Baldinger gave New Paltz a 13-6 lead to start the fourth. Oneonta cut the lead to four with goals from Moore, senior Margaret Byrne (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington), and senior Marissa Evans (Jamesville, NY/LaFayette), but time expired before a comeback.Â
Moore finished with four goals and three draw controls, while Evans had a goal and an assist with three draw controls.Â
M. Atwater recorded four goals and six draw controls, while Shaw added four goals and four draw controls. L. Atwater tacked on three goals.Â
Senior Courtney Gallagher (Montrose, NY/Hendrick Hudson) made 12 saves, while New Paltz's Gabriella Tommaso had seven saves.Â
Oneonta returns to New Paltz on Sat. Apr. 27 to face the Hawks at 11 a.m. for the SUNYAC Tournament first round.Â
