NEW PALTZ, N.Y. -Â New Paltz scored six goals in the first quarter to end the Oneonta women's lacrosse team's post-season run on Saturday morning. The Hawks (14-3, 6-3 SUNYAC) defeated the Red Dragons (5-12, 3-6) 17-5 in the first round on Saturday morning.Â
Kaitlyn Shaw got on the board first in the first 40 seconds to make it 1-0, but Oneonta responded with a goal from Margaret Byrne (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) to tie at 12:44. The Hawks rattled off seven straight goals from five different players to go up 8-1 in the second quarter.Â
Senior Lauren Mancini (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) scored at 7:58 off an assist from Ellie Downey (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) to cut the lead to six, but another Hawks goal from Lexi Atwaters pushed their advantage to 8-2. Back-to-back goals from junior Cassidy Moore (Hampton Bays, NY/Hampton Bays) and Downey cut the lead to 9-4 early in the third quarter, but another 7-0 New Paltz run made it 16-4. Lindsay Townes added a goal in the fourth as the Hawks' defense only allowed three Oneonta goals in the second half.Â
Downey finished with a goal and an assist, and two caused turnovers, while Moore had one goal and two ground balls.Â
Shaw led the game with eight points (two goals, eight assists), three ground balls, and eight draw controls. Lexi Atwater netted four goals, while Morgan Atwater finished with three goals and eight draw controls.Â
Senior Courtney Gallagher (Montrose, NY/Hendrick Hudson) made 13 saves in goal, while Gabriella Tommaso had four stops.Â
