ONEONTA, N.Y. -Â The Oneonta women's lacrosse team used a fast start to defeat Fredonia 17-11 on Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons (4-8, 2-4 SUNYAC) outscored the Blue Devils (4-10, 0-7 SUNYAC) 7-1 in the first quarter for the senior day victory.Â
After senior Margaret Byrne (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) caused a Fredonia turnover, Oneonta drew a free position foul at 12:58. Senior Lauren Mancini (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) scored to make it 1-0. Oneonta continued with six unanswered goals, with senior Marissa Evans (Jamesville, NY/LaFayette) and sophomore Cassidy Moore (Hampton Bays, NY/Hampton Bays) accounting for two each. Fredonia's Audrey Brown scored with 14 seconds left to get the Blue Devils on the board.Â
Fredonia opened the second quarter with Sydney Buchko netting a free-position score at 9:44. Moore found the back of the net off a pass from senior Ana Stiso (Latham, NY/Shaker) to make it 8-2. Buchko responded at 8:04 with a goal, and Noelle scored at 4:21 to make it 8-4. The Blue Devils cut the lead to three before Moore scored before the end of the half to take a 9-5 lead.
Fredonia pulled within two goals following two goals by Buchko to put it at 11-9. Evans and Mancini scored back-to-back to give Oneonta a 13-9 advantage heading into the fourth.Â
The Red Dragons scored four straight goals to start the fourth and went up 17-9 with 3:28 remaining. Fredonia scored two more times, but Oneonta held on for the win.
Moore finished with eight points (five goals, three assists), three groundballs, eight draw controls, and three caused turnovers. Evans added five goals, one assist, and five draw controls. Mancini scored four goals with an assist, while Elizabeth Doherty (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) had two goals. Byrne had a goal, and three caused turnovers.
Buchko scored five goals for Fredonia and dished out three assists. Megan Karalus had three goals and an assist.Â
Senior Courtney Gallagher (Montrose, NY/Hendrick Hudson) made ten saves in goal, while Ashleigh Manns made 14 stops.Â
Oneonta next plays Skidmore on Sun. Apr. 14 at noon.Â
