OSWEGO, N.Y. -Â The Oneonta women's lacrosse team dropped a 19-8 decision to Oswego on Saturday afternoon, falling to 2-5 overall and 1-1 in the SUNYAC. The Lakers move to 6-4 and 2-0 in the conference.Â
The Red Dragons rattled off three shots in the opening two minutes after senior Marissa Evans (Jamesville, NY/LaFayette) won the draw control. The third found the back of the net, with senior Margaret Byrne (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) scoring off an assist from Cassidy Moore (Hampton Bays, NY/Hampton Bays). Oswego responded with two consecutive goals before junior Elizabeth Doherty (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) tied at 8:42 to make it 2-2. Junior Mason Benvenuto (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) scored on a free position shot at 5:55 to take a one-goal lead, but Oswego's Sela Wiley found the equalizer late in the first quarter.Â
Byrne tallied the first goal of the second quarter less than a minute in to give Oneonta a 4-3 lead. The Lakers used goals by Madison Davis and Wiley to go ahead 5-4 before Byrne scored her third goal at 9:44 to tie once again. Oswego closed out the half on a 4-0 run, with Noelle Smith adding two scores to make it 9-5 at the break.Â
Evans tacked on the first goal of the second half to cut the lead to 9-6, but Oswego scored five unanswered to take a 14-6 lead heading into the fourth.Â
Lindsay Townes and Benvenuto scored to cut the Oswego lead to eight, but Davis's two final goals from Davis capped off a double-digit victory.Â
Byrne led the Red Dragons with three goals, while Benvenuto added two.Â
Wiley led the Lakers with six goals and one assist, and Isabella Lembo scored four. Davis recorded eight points (four goals, seven assists).Â
Goalkeeper Julia Hawkins (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) made 12 saves, while Oswego's Sarah Kamide made 12.Â
Oneonta returns home to face Hartwick on Tue. Apr. 2 at 4 p.m.
