UTICA, N.Y. - A solid first half led Utica to a 15-5 win over the Oneonta women's lacrosse team on Thursday afternoon. With the win, the Pioneers move to 4-2 overall, while the Red Dragons fall to 1-4.Â
In the first quarter, Utica scored three goals within two minutes to take an early 3-0. Stuhlman netted the opening score at 10:18. Stuhlman won the following draw control, and Maria Stuhlman scored at 9:25. Samantha DeCondo added another goal at 8:27.Â
After a Utica penalty, senior Margaret Byrne (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) scored a women-up goal at 5:49 to cut the lead to 5:49. The Pioneers answered with scores from Aana Blaszka and Alyssa Pisano to push ahead 5-1.Â
Stuhlman scored the opening goal of the second quarter before senior Lauren Mancini (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) found the back of the net following a Pioneers' penalty at 13:40. Utica closed out the half on a 4-0 run to lead 10-2 at the break.Â
The Utica momentum carried over into the third with two more goals to take a 12-2 lead. Mancini scored on a free position at 2:33.Â
After Stuhlman scored to start the fourth, Oneonta goalkeeper Julia Hawkins (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) stopped a pair of shots before senior Marissa Evans (Jamesville, NY/LaFayette) scored at 10:39. Mancini added her third goal at 7:33 to record the hat trick and make it 14-5. Utica added one final goal at 1:42.
Mancini finished with three goals on eight shots with two ground balls. Evans had a goal, an assist, four ground balls, two draw controls, and one caused turnover.Â
Utica had three multi-goal scorers, with G. Stuhlman scoring five with seven draw controls and M. Stuhlman adding three. DeCondo had two goals and an assist.
Senior Courtney Gallagher (Montrose, NY/Hendrick Hudson) made four saves in goal, while Hawkins also had four stops.Â
Utica's Makayla Purdy made 13 saves.Â
Oneonta opens SUNYAC play against Geneseo on Sat. Mar. 23 at noon on Red Dragon Field.
