CORTLAND, N.Y. - The Oneonta men's swimming & diving team wrapped up action at the two-day Cortland Snow Flurries Invite on Saturday. The Red Dragons placed second with 1,013 points, while Cortland won with 1,423. Junior Delroy Tyrrell (Trincity, Trinidad and Tobago) swam two pool records in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events.
The first day opened with Oneonta taking second in the 200-yard medley relay. Tyrrell, sophomore Ethan Cairo (Bethpage, NY/Freeport), junior Calvin Hitzschke (Mexico, NY/Mexico Academy & Central School), and senior James Llewellyn (Great River, NY/East Islip) swam a 1:37.75.
Sophomore Andrew Capella (Glenville, NY/Burnt-Hills-Ballston Lake) swam a 5:16.33 to finish fourth in the 500-yard freestyle, and sophomore Colin Ringwood (Auburn, NY/Auburn) was seventh at 5:22.49. Llewellyn took third in the 200-yard IM at 2:03.48. Tyrrell placed second in the 50-yard freestyle at 22.10. Hitzschke touched sixth at 22.76, while sophomore Cosmo Martinelli (Albany, NY/Albany) placed seventh at 22.88. Fifth-year Ross Caimano (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) placed eighth with a 22.95.
Oneonta concluded the first day with a second-place 800-yard freestyle relay. Ringwood, freshman Russell Cheng (Westchester, NY/Ardsley), senior Maddox Aramini (Cooperstown, NY/Cherry Valley-Springfield), and Llewellyn finished at 7:43.44.
The second day began with the 400-yard medley relay, where Oneonta's group of Tyrrell, Cairo, Hitzschke, and Llewellyn took second at 3:38.47.
Capella earned a second-place finish in the 400-yard IM at 4:40.22, while junior Nicky Byrd (Purchase, NY/Harrison) was fourth at 4:55.84. Junior Brendan Heaney (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks Central) placed fifth at 4:59.36.
In the 100-yard butterfly, Hitzschke swam a 56.34 for fourth. Senior Joseph Campise (Queens, NY/St. Francis Prep) took fifth at 57.77, and Martinelli placed sixth at 58.46.
Llewellyn swam a 1:49.57 to win the 200-yard freestyle, while Ringwood was fifth at 1:59.90. Cairo was the top Oneonta swimmer in the 100-yard breaststroke and touched third at 1:02.99.
Tyrrell set the Cortland pool record in the 100-yard backstroke and won with a time of 51.30. He also set the pool record in the 200-yard backstroke by winning at 1:54.93.
Oneonta's 200-yard freestyle relay of Caimano, Martinelli, Hitzschke, and Tyrrell finished second at 1:29.86.
The Red Dragons performed well in the 1,650-yard freestyle, with Capella placing second at 18:40.63. Sophomore Gavin Weseman (Olean, NY/Olean) took third at 19:57.05.
Oneonta next competes in a dual match at Cortland on Fri. Jan. 24 at 4 p.m.
