SCRANTON, PA - The Oneonta men's swimming & diving team placed second out of seven teams with 840 points in the weekend's Electric City Invitational hosted by Marywood University. The University of Scranton won the meet with 1,163 points.
The Red Dragons opened by winning the 200-yard freestyle relay. Fifth-year Ross Caimano (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury), senior James Llewellyn (Great River, NY/East Islip), junior Delroy Tyrrell (Trincity, Trinidad and Tobago), and sophomore Cosmo Martinelli (Albany, NY/Albany) finished at 1:28.11.
In the 500-yard freestyle, sophomore Andrew Capella (Glenville, NY/Burnt-Hills-Ballston Lake) led Oneonta with a seventh-place finish at 5:10.05. Llewellyn was third in the 200-yard IM with a 2:02.50.
Tyrrell took first in the 50-yard freestyle at 21.87, while Martinelli touched fifth at 22.87.
Oneonta's 400-yard medley relay of juniors Ethan Cairo (Bethpage, NY/Freeport) and Calvin Hitzschke (Mexico, NY/Mexico Academy & Central School), Tyrrell, and Llewellyn finished second at 3:37.24. The 200-yard medley relay grabbed first place at 1:37.14.
Hitzschke swam a 54.18 in the 100-yard butterfly to grab a second-place finish. Junior Maddox Aramini (Cooperstown, NY/Cherry Valley-Springfield) touched fifth at 55.45. Sophomore Colin Ringwood (Auburn, NY/Auburn) took fourth in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:51.53. In the 100-yard breaststroke, Cairo placed second with a 1:01.45. Tyrrell won the 100-yard backstroke at 52.67 and took first in the 200-yard backstroke at 1:59.31. Llewellyn touched fourth at 2:05.66.
Caimano swam a 49.92 to place sixth in the 100-yard freestyle. Junior Luke Goodspeed (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) tallied a second-place performance in the 200-yard breaststroke at 2:14.90. In the 200-yard butterfly, Hitzschke was third at 2:08.26, and sophomore Andrew Capella (Glenville, NY/Burnt-Hills-Ballston Lake) was fourth at 2:09.76.
Oneonta placed second in the 400-yard freestyle relay with Tyrrell, Martinelli, Llewellyn, and freshman Russell Cheng (Westchester, NY/Ardsley) swimming a 3:18.99. Â
Freshman Ben Heyman (Glens Falls, NY/Glens Falls) scored 177.30 in the one-meter dive to finish second overall. He took second in the three-meter dive with 151.75 points.
Oneonta next competes at the Cortland Snow Flurries Invitational from Dec. 6-7.
