Women’s Tennis Drops to Fredonia at Binghamton Tennis Center

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team fell short to Fredonia in SUNYAC play, 4-3, on their second day at the Binghamton Tennis Center, Friday afternoon. Oneonta had the lead heading into singles play, however Fredonia secured four singles matches, including one via opponent retirement and one in a third set, for the win. Freshman Taylor Plue (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) won her matches in doubles and singles as the Red Dragons fell to 3-4 on the season, 0-4 in the conference, and the Blue Devils improved to 5-6 overall and 1-3 in SUNYAC play.

Plue paired up with junior Kelly Hayes (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) in doubles play and defeated Claire LeFevre and Gabby Farr, 6-3, on the No. 2 court. Plue and Hayes are now 4-2 this season as a doubles team. Freshmen Annika Cripe (Islip, N.Y./Islip) and Kyra Murray (Warwick, N.Y.) earned their first doubles victory and gained the doubles match point for Oneonta with a 6-4 win over Sophie Olson and Sierra Allen on the No. 3 court. Junior Danielle Copp (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) and sophomore Haley Peck (West Point, N.Y./James I. O'Neil) had a close contest on court No. 1, but Bernadette Gens and Lucy Prevet took the match, 6-4.

Peck avenged herself in singles play and beat Gens on the No. 1 court, 7-5, 6-3, to improve to 4-2 this season. Plue won the No. 3 court in straight 6-1 sets against Farr and is now 4-3 in singles play.

Fredonia earned a point on the other four singles courts to win the match. The Blue Devils took court No. 2 and court No. 6 in straight sets. Cripe was beating LeFevre, 5-4 in the first set of their match, however Cripe had to retire from the match.

The final match was on court No. 5 between Hayes and Olson. After dropping the first set, Hayes fought hard in the second set and won in a back-and-forth tiebreaker, 8-6, to force a third set. The third set was a battle, yet Olson came away with the match, 6-0, 6-7(6-8), 6-4.

The Red Dragons wrap up SUNYAC play at the Binghamton Tennis Center tomorrow, October 5, with a match against Oswego at 3 pm.
