Oneonta Opens Season by Winning Hartwick Relays

ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Oneonta men's swimming & diving team won four events at the season-opening Hartwick relays to take first out of five teams on Sunday afternoon. Oneonta finished with 600 points.

The Red Dragons opened the 25-event meet with a second-place performance in the 400-yard medley relay. Senior James Llewellyn (Great River, NY/East Islip), juniors Delroy Tyrell and Calvin Hitzschke (Mexico, NY/Mexico Academy & Central School), and freshman Luke Goodspeed (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) clocked in at 3:45.54. Oneonta followed up with a first-place finish in the 300-yard backstroke relay. Tyrell, Llewellyn, and freshman Nicky Byrd (Purchase, NY/Harrison) touched at 3:04.39.

In the 300-yard breaststroke relay, junior David Scott (South Ozone Park, NY/), sophomore Matt Cleveland (Binghamton, NY/Union Endicott/ Endicott), and freshman Bastian Dudley (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) swam a 3:49.64 to place third. The Red Dragons group of seniors Joseph Campise (Queens, NY/St. Francis Prep) and Maddox Aramini (Cooperstown, NY/Cherry Valley-Springfield), and Hitzschke won the 300-yard butterfly relay at 2:51.37.

Oneonta placed third in the 850-yard crescendo relay. Junior Brendan Heaney (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks Central) and sophomores Cosmo Martinelli (Albany, NY/Albany), Colin Ringwood (Auburn, NY/Auburn), and Gavin Weseman (Olean, NY/Olean) swam an 8:43.49.

Tyrell, Martinelli, Hitzschke, and freshman Russell Cheng (Westchester, NY/Ardsley) won the 200-yard freestyle relay at 1:30.25. Oneonta then placed second in the 600-yard IM relay. Llewellyn, Goodspeed, and sophomore Andrew Capella (Glenville, NY/Burnt-Hills-Ballston Lake) clocked in at 6:34.73. In the 200-yard medley relay, Byrd, Ringwood, Heaney, and sophomore Ethan Cairo (Bethpage, NY/Freeport) grabbed third at 1:45.96.

Oneonta continued with a second-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Aramini, Heaney, Hitzschke, and Martinelli finished at 3:27.05. The swimming events concluded with the 800-yard medley relay. Oneonta's Campise, Goodspeed, Capella, and Llewellyn took third at 8:50.87.

Oneonta next travels to face Oswego in dual meet action on Sat. Oct. 19 at 1 p.m.
