Buffalo State Sweeps Oneonta

ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Oneonta women's volleyball team fell 3-0 to Buffalo State on Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons fall to 7-13 overall and 0-3 in the SUNYAC, while the Bengals move to 12-8 and 4-0 in the conference.

Junior Katie Spano (Dryden, NY/Dryden) led the team with nine kills, while junior Sabrina Squicciarini (Manorville, NY/St. Anthony's) added six kills and a block. Sophomore Emma Morretta (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) tallied six kills and a match-high three blocks. Freshman Hailey Herrera (Brooklyn, NY/Park Slope Collegiate) made 14 assists and three aces, while junior Mikayla Kendrick (Nassau, NY/Columbia High School/East Greenbush) recorded 18 digs.

Samantha Coakley led Buffalo State with ten kills, and Ella Wittman added nine kills, four aces, and 13 digs. Karlie Shaffer led the team with 21 assists.

After Oneonta took a 19-16 lead in the first set, Buffalo State used a 5-0 run with two Wittman aces to advance 21-19. Freshman McKenna Law (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) sent in a kill to cut the lead to 23-22. Another kill from Morretta kept it a one-point set, but Kate Rutigliano sent in the set-winning kill.

The Bengals jumped ahead 7-3 in the second set, but the Red Dragons fought back using a 5-1 span with three Spano kills to tie at 8-8. After some back-and-forth points, the Bengals rattled off three unanswered to go up 14-11. Kills from Colleen McCabe (Rockville Centre, NY/Oceanside) and Squicciarini kept Oneonta within one before another 3-0 Buffalo State run. Gianna May (Baldwinsville, NY/Baldwinsville) knocked in a kill to cut the lead to 20-17 before the Bengals closed out on a 5-0 run.

Oneonta took a 5-3 lead in the third set following two straight Herrera aces. Buffalo State responded with a 6-0 run and never gave up the lead afterward. Oneonta cut the lead to four. Morreta tallied a kill and then blocked an attack with May to make it 24-21, but the Bengals took the following point.

Oneonta next travels to face Morrisville on Fri. Oct. 18 at 6 p.m.
