ONEONTA, N.Y. -Â The Oneonta men's basketball team bounced back with a 92-60 win over Potsdam on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Elijah Castillo (Bronx, NY/St. Raymonds) scored a career-high 25 points as the Red Dragons move to 7-8 overall and 4-4 in the SUNYAC. The Bears fall to 3-13 overall and 2-7 in the SUNYAC.
""I thought we bounced back nicely," said head coach Cameron Conover. "Several guys stepped up and made the necessary adjustments from the night before."
Potsdam took a 12-11 lead to start the game, but it was all Oneonta afterward as the Red Dragons rattled off a 13-0 run with six points from Castillo to go ahead by 12. After a pair of Parker Kelly free throws, Castillo scored the following six points, and then sophomore Daniel Penubothula (Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream Central) drained a three at 7:39 to make it 33-14. The Bears used a layup from Kawar Singh, and Colton Huestis hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to 14 points.Â
Senior Graham Wooden (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) used a fast break bucket to push Oneonta ahead 37-19 at 3:45. The Red Dragons then closed out the half on a 5-0 run with layups by Castillo and senior Xavier Hill (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) to go into the break up 42-21.Â
The Bears brought the game with 18 following baskets from Huestis and Nicholas Cortez. Wooden responded with a mid-range jumper at 16:37, and another Castillo layup pushed the Red Dragons up 50-28.Â
Oneonta kept building its lead, and senior Ryan Teaney (Schenectady, NY/Guilderland) sank a trey at 11:56 to push the advantage to 31 points. Freshman Mohammad Sylla (Bronx, NY/Darrow) scored on the fast break as the Red Dragons continued to roll. Sophomore Ahmed Toure (Bronx, NY/All Hallows) scored inside at 9:14, and Penubothula followed with a dunk to make it 75-38. Teaney hit two more triples in the final two minutes as Potsdam never could surmount a comeback.
Castillo finished with a double-double with 25 points and ten rebounds while shooting 11-for-15. Wooden added 17 points with four boards and two steals. Hill scored nine with 12 rebounds, and Penubothula had six points and ten boards. Sylla scored eight with three steals.
Huestis led Potsdam with 18 points, while Erik Wall added 11. Ethan Baksh grabbed four rebounds.
Oneonta will next travel to face No. 6 Oswego on Tuesday. Jan 23 at 7:30 p.m.
