OSWEGO, N.Y. -Â The Oneonta men's basketball team fell 94-89 to No. Oswego in overtime on Tuesday evening. The Red Dragons had four players score in double digits as they fall to 7-9 overall and 4-5 in the SUNYAC. The Lakers move to 16-1 and 10-0 in the conference.Â
"I am really proud of our team's effort tonight," said head coach Cameron Conover. "We played tough and unfortunately came up a little short. Oswego is a great eam and they are hard to beat. This loss definitely stings and our guys are disappointed byt we have to respond and get ready for the weekend."
After the Lakers took a 15-6 lead following a three-pointer from Jamal Achille, junior Xavier Hill (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) scored inside to cut the lead to seven. Ahkee Anderson scored a jumper, and then sophomore Elijah Castillo (Bronx, NY/St. Raymonds) netted a layup before a three from senior Graham Wooden (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) to make it 19-13.Â
Baskets from Castillo and junior PJ Laidley (Fort Lauderdale, FL/Pembroke Pines Charter) cut the lead to one, but a 5-2 Oswego run kept the Lakers up by six. The Lakers took a 32-25 lead after Kaleb Cook converted inside. Oneonta answered with a 13-0 run with back-to-back triples from Hill and freshman Mohammad Sylla (Bronx, NY/Darrow) to take their first lead at 38-32. The Red Dragons closed out on a 6-0 span to lead 46-38 heading into halftime.Â
Oneonta built up to a ten-point lead early in the second half and led 54-44 following a basket by Hill at 16:41. Oswego rattled off an 8-0 run to cut the advantage to two before Wooden drained a triple at 13:52. The Red Dragons held a narrow lead, and freshman Daniel Penubothula (Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream Central) grabbed a steal and threw down a dunk to make it 62-54 with 12:26 remaining.Â
Wooden pushed the Oneonta lead to 11 following a three-pointer at 8:20, and then layups from junior Caleb Brown (Brooklyn, NY/Uncommon Charter) and Castillo made it 77-65.Â
Oneonta looked to stay in control at 4:35 when Brown scored inside, but the Lakers scored seven unanswered points to cut the lead to one possession. Oswego then went on a 5-0 run to end the half and force overtime at 83-83.Â
The Lakers won the tip-off, and Anderson scored the opening basket to take the lead. Jeremiah Sparks hit a three-pointer at 4:06 to push Oswego up 88-84. A pair of Castillo free throws and a Brown layup tied 88-88 at 1:10, but four straight Oswego points pushed the Lakers ahead. Hill split free throws to make it 92-89, but a final pair of free throws from Sparks sealed the game away.Â
Hill recorded a double-double with 20 points and 19 rebounds. Wooden added 18 points, four rebounds, and three assists, while Castillo finished with 17 points, seven boards, a block, and a steal. Brown had 13 points with five rebounds.Â
Sparks scored 24 points with seven rebounds, and Anderson had 20 points. Achille finished with 13 points and seven rebounds.Â
Oneonta returns home to face Fredonia on Fri. Jan. 26 at 7:30 p.m.
