ONEONTA, N.Y. -Â Senior Graham Wooden (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) scored a career-high 23 points, but it was not enough as Plattsburgh came out on top 86-80 on Friday evening. Oneonta falls to 6-8 overall and 3-4 in the SUNYAC, while Plattsburgh moves to 8-7 and 5-3 in the conference.Â
"Give Plattsburgh a lot of credit," said head coach Cameron Conover. "They played tough, and we struggled to guard them. We have to bounce back and be ready for Potsdam."
Plattsburgh took an 8-5 lead early in the first before Oneonta used a 9-0 run to go ahead by six. The Cardinals then responded with their own 9-0 span to regain the lead at 11:31. Wooden knocked down a triple at 8:57 to cut the Cardinals' lead to 22-19. Plattsburgh kept a narrow lead until another Wooden three-pointer made it 31-29.Â
Plattsburgh's Dylan Trombley responded with a trey at 4:50, and then a fastbreak layup by Jeremiah Smith put the Cardinals up by five. Wooden hit back-to-back threes to give Oneonta a 37-36 lead with three minutes left in the half. Freshman Mohammad Sylla (Bronx, NY/Darrow) scored inside, and junior Xavier Hill (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) knocked down a layup at 1:31 to build the lead to 41-37. Wooden scored again to make it 43-38 at the break.
Oneonta took a seven-point lead at 18:25 after Hill scored inside. A pair of free throws from Elijah Castillo (Bronx, NY/St. Raymonds) and another Hill layup pushed the Red Dragons up 52-43. Sophomore Delano Knox (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) then knocked down free throws to make it an 11-point game.Â
Oneonta took a 14-point lead after Sylla scored on free throws, but Plattsburgh used a 7-0 run to pull within seven points. Castillo converted two straight baskets to make it 63-54.Â
Oneonta appeared to remain in control, and Wooden scored a mid-range jumper to bring the Red Dragons' lead back up to ten. Plattsburgh sank three straight triples from Trombley, Franklin Infante, and Willard Anderson Jr. to take a 70-69 lead at 6:17.Â
Castillo brought the Red Dragons back up again, but an 8-0 Cardinals' run made it 81-76 with 1:31 remaining. Oneonta struggled shooting in the final minute as Plattsburgh held on for the win.
Castillo and Wooden both finished with 23 points, while Castillo added six boards and four assists. Wooden grabbed five rebounds. Hill finished with 15 points and six rebounds, and Sylla scored 11 points with eight boards.
Trombley scored a game-high 28 points and had three steals. Ikechukwu Ezike and Sasha Vidrini scored 15 points, while Kevin Tabb scored 10.
Oneonta next hosts Potsdam on Sat. Jan. 20 at 4 p.m.
