Oneonta Men's Track & Field Places Second at Utica Winter Opener

UTICA, N.Y. - The Oneonta men's track & field team had multiple top-five finishes, including three first-place finishers, on the way to a second-place finish at the Utica Winter Opener on Friday evening. Sophomore Josh Jerome (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) won the triple jump, while senior Aidan Kelly (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) took first on the high jump. The Red Dragons scored 104 points, while Utica was first with 107.

The meet opened with the 5,000-meter race, where senior Jonthomas Bierman (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck) placed third at 15:39.04, and senior John Balk, Jr. (Suffern, NY/Suffern) grabbed fourth at 15:45.10. 

In the 60-meter dash, senior Chris Ganley (Pine Bush, NY/Pine Bush) ran an AARTFC qualifying time of 7.07 to finish second in the prelims. He improved his time in the finals with a 7.04 to take second overall. 

Oneonta had two qualifiers in the 60-meter hurdles, with freshman Ethan Christophersen (Bayport/Bayport Blue Pont High School) taking fifth at 9.18 and senior Alex Mavros (Hopewell Junction, NY/Arlington) going sixth with a 9.20. Christopherson was fourth in the finals at 9.04, and Mavros was fifth with a 9.12.

Junior Joseph Ciardi (Accord, NY/) ran a 55.96 in the 400-meter to place sixth overall, and senior Luke Jarski (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) grabbed fourth in the 1,000-meter at 2:34.44. 

Ganley placed fourth in the 200-meter race with a time of 22.85.

In the field events, senior Cliff Biehl marked 6.34 meters to earn a fifth-place finish. Jerome won the triple jump at 12.83 meters, while Kelly won the high jump by clearing 1.94 meters. Senior Michael Carey (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) was second in the pole vault at 4.00 meters, and Kelly took third at 3.70 meters. 

Senior Vincent Zheng (Nanuet, NY/Nanuet) grabbed second in the shot put at 13.75 meters, and senior Marco Alteri took sixth in the weight throw at 14.03 meters.

Oneonta will next compete at the Ithaca Quad Meet on Saturday. Jan. 20.
