ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta field hockey team dropped the Battle of the Hills matchup against Hartwick, 5-3, Wednesday evening. One game after setting her collegiate-high 17 saves, sophomore
Maura Leib (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse Minoa) broke her record against the Hawks with 19 saves. The Red Dragons moved to 1-2 on the season, while the Hawks sit at 2-1 overall. Â
Hartwick managed to score the first two goals of the game. Kylie Krawiec got the Hawks on the board with a goal 8:35 into the first period and Libby Fortin extended the lead six minutes into the second. Oneonta had a chance to tie it near the end of the first period with a couple shots from seniors
Erin Clark (Somers, N.Y./Somers) and
Larkin Uhl (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston), but both were saved by Ashley Luppens.
With a couple minutes remaining in the first half, the Red Dragons got on the board. Following three straight penalty corners, Oneonta worked the right side of the shooting circle, got the ball to Clark near the baseline and passed it in front of the cage to graduate student
Morgan Fleming (Harpursville, N.Y./Harpursville) who hit the back of the cage.
The Hawks extended their lead to 4-1 at 38:53 in the second half with goals from Julie Rizzi and Danielle Hand, however the Red Dragons scored two themselves and brought it back to a one-goal game two minutes later. For the first goal, freshman
Abigail Draper (Remsen, NY/Holland Patent) took the penalty corner and pushed it out in front of her to senior
Michaela Maniscalco (Northport, N.Y./Northport). Maniscalco then centered the ball to the back right of the cage to senior
Carly O'Connor (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) who fought past a Hawk defender and Luppens for the goal. On another penalty corner, Maniscalco received the ball but had the pass blocked and redirected to freshman
Alexandra Howell () inside the top of the circle. Howell then sent a centering pass in front of the cage to junior
Emilia Montgomery (Simsbury, CT/Simsbury) who scored and made it a 3-4 game.
Ashley Tricarico added an insurance goal at 51:35 in the fourth period for Hartwick as they were able to hold off Oneonta in the closing minutes. Â
Opposite of Leib's 19 save-performance, Luppens finished with six saves for Hartwick.
The Hawks outshot the Red Dragons 30-15, while Oneonta had a 16-11 advantage in penalty corners.
The Red Dragons are back in action Saturday when they host Castleton at 12 pm.
