ONEONTA, N.Y. - Junior Emilia Montgomery (Simsbury, CT/Simsbury) scored the game-winning goal in the 57th minute to help the Oneonta field hockey team to a 2-1 win over Ramapo on Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons move to 4-5 overall, while the Roadrunners slip to 2-5.
Oneonta struck first less than two minutes into the first quarter when Montgomery had a shot turned aside by the Ramapo defense. Senior Carly O'Connor (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) collected the rebound and chipped the ball back in to make it 1-0 at 1:20.Â
The Roadrunners attempted to counter, but goalkeeper Maura Leib (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse Minoa) turned away shots from Tessa Pofahl and Ana Plaia to keep them off the board.
This time, it was the visitors scoring early in the second quarter. Ramapo took advantage of some confusion in front of the Red Dragons' net, and Plaia found the back of the net off a Morgan Trotter assist at 19:42. Oneonta was held without a shot in the quartet, while Leib saved the only other attempt from Ramapo.
A quiet third quarter followed, with the Red Dragons outshooting Ramapo 3-0 before a more offensive fourth quarter. After three straight Oneonta corners, the Red Dragons finally broke through, with Montgomery scoring off a Morgan Fleming (Harpursville, N.Y./Harpursville) assist in the 57th minute.Â
Leib finished the game with five saves, while Ramapo's Michelle Kukan tallied nine.Â
Oneonta next travels to play Keuka at 4 p.m. on Wed. Oct. 4.
