Oneonta Falls in SUNYAC Opener at Buffalo State

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Sophomore Colleen McCabe (Rockville Centre, NY/Oceanside) tallied a career-high 13 kills, but it was not enough as the Oneonta women's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to Buffalo State in SUNYAC play on Friday evening. Despite the sweep, the Red Dragons (2-10, 0-1 SUNYAC) fought to extra points in the second and third sets.

The Bengals (11-6, 1-0 SUNYAC) opened the first set with a 25-16 victory. After a Sophia Gerace (Pearl River, NY/Pearl River) ace tied 5-5, Buffalo State went on a 6-1 run with two kills from Ella Wittman. Seniors Isabella Fabrizio (Highland Mills, NY/Cornwall) and Ashanti Davis (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Hendrick Hudson) responded with a pair of kills to cut the lead to 11-9. Another Bengals run pushed the advantage to 15-10. A 4-0 Oneonta run comprised of three Davis kills made it a one-point set and kills from Gianna May (Baldwinsville, NY/Baldwinsville) and Sabrina Squicciarini (Manorville, NY/St. Anthony's) made it 17-16. Two kills from Buffalo's Wittman spurred an 8-0 to close out the set win.

The Red Dragons fell behind 18-14 in the second set, and the Bengals appeared to take control following an ace from Riley Domin to make it 20-14. May knocked in a kill to lessen the lead to five, then a 4-0 run with a Fabrizio kill and an ace from Annalisa Alicea (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) made it 21-19. Two kills and an ace by McCabe tied at 22-22, and then the Red Dragons took a one-point lead following kills from Fabrizio and sophomore Katie Spano (Dryden, NY/Dryden). Buffalo State tied 24-24 and then won 26-24 by two straight kills from Wittman.

After the Bengals took an 8-6 lead in the third set, the Red Dragons answered with an 8-2 run to go up by five. Buffalo State bounced back with five straight points to tie 14-14, but Oneonta stayed strong. Kills from McCabe and Fabrizio and then a Spano block pushed the Red Dragons ahead 17-14. The Bengals used a 4-0 span to retake the lead and pulled away 22-19. Julia Reedy (Galway, NY/Galway) knocked in a kill to begin a 3-0 run to tie again, and then it proved to be a back-and-forth affair until McCabe recorded a kill and ace to put Oneonta up 26-25. Buffalo State took the following two points, and McCabe tied at 27-27 with another kill. The Bengals grabbed the final two to complete the sweep.

McCabe had a match-high 13 kills with two aces, while Davis finished with nine kills and four blocks. Fabrizio added seven kills. Gerace made 24 assists, while Alicea recorded a match-high 21 digs.

Oneonta looks to bounce back on Sat. Sept. 30, when they play Fredonia at 1 p.m.
