FREDONIA, N.Y. -Â The Oneonta women's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Fredonia in SUNYAC play on Saturday afternoon. After falling 25-16 and 25-13 in the first two sets, the Red Dragons (2-11, 0-2 SUNYAC won the third 25-17. The fourth went extra points, but the Blur Devils (3-11, 1-1 SUNYAC) won 26-24.
Oneonta struggled to find its hitting rhythm in the opening sets but woke up in the third by opening on a 6-0 run. Fredonia fought back before a bad set, and an ace from Colleen McCabe (Rockville Centre, NY/Oceanside) made it 11-5. The Blue Devils rattled off a 5-0 run to cut the lead to one, but the Red Dragons held a narrow lead. A McCabe kill and then a duo block from Ashanti Davis (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Hendrick Hudson) and McCabe put Oneonta up 16-13. After Fredonia cut the lead to two, McCabe and Katie Spano (Dryden, NY/Dryden) sent in kills to stack a 6-0 Oneonta span to make it 23-15. Two more kills from Spano gave the Red Dragons the set win.Â
Fredonia took a 21-19 lead in the fourth before Oneonta used a 4-0 run comprised of a kill and block from Davis, a Julia Reedy (Galway, NY/Galway) ace, and another McCabe kill. The Blue Devils took the following three points to go up 24-23 before a bad set by Fredonia tied it up. Two final kills from Emma FOley and Kylie O'Brien sealed the match victory.Â
McCabe led Oneonta with ten kills and two aces, while Isabella Fabrizio (Highland Mills, NY/Cornwall) added six. Abby Stevens (Otisville, NY/Minisink Valley, Slate Hill) recorded a career-high four aces. Davis tallied six blocks, and Spano had four. Sophia Gerace (Pearl River, NY/Pearl River) made 19 assists, and Annalisa Alicea (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) made 19 digs.
Oneonta plays in its home opener next when they host Geneseo in SUNYAC play on Fri. Oct. 6 at 6 p.m.
