Knights Outlast Red Dragons

ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Oneonta women's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Geneseo on Friday evening in the Red Dragons' home opener. Geneseo took the opening sets 25-15 and 26-24 before Oneonta won 27-25 in the third. The Knights wrapped up with a 25-17 victory in the fourth. 

Oneonta played a closer second set after a slow start in the first. Geneseo took the first three points before Oneonta rattled off a 5-0 run with kills from Katie Spano (Dryden, NY/Dryden) and Gianna May (Baldwinsville, NY/Baldwinsville). The Knights broke the streak with a block from Sommer Madigan. Spano sent in a kill to push the Red Dragons' lead to 6-4 to hold a narrow lead. Senior Isabella Fabrizio (Highland Mills, NY/Cornwall) knocked in a kill to make it 9-7 before Geneseo took the following two points to tie. 

After a pair of kills from Fabrizio and Colleen McCabe (Rockville Centre, NY/Oceanside), the Red Dragons went ahead by two. Both sides traded leads afterward, and there were seven more ties. A Knights' service error made it 24-24, but Geneseo took the final two points to go up 2-0.

Senior Ashanti Davis (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Hendrick Hudson) spurred a 5-0 run in the third set with a kill from May and an ace by Annalisa Alicea (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington). Geneseo cut the lead to 7-5 following a kill from Julia Wallace. Junior Layla Alt (Shullsburg, WI/Shullsburg) snuck in a kill, and Fabrizio hit a kill to make it 10-5. Geneseo brought it within three minutes. Oneonta responded with a 5-0 run with a kill and block from Alt and a service ace from Spano. Junior Sophia Gerace (Pearl River, NY/Pearl River) made a kill to put the score 17-10, but the Knights used an 8-0 lead to go ahead by one. After some back-and-forth runs, Geneseo went up 24-23. A Knights' error and then a kill by Sabrina Squicciarini (Manorville, NY/St. Anthony's) gave Oneonta a 25-24 advantage. Geneseo tied on a kill from Linda Rossi before Squicciarini and Davis hit kills to give the Red Dragons a set victory.

Oneonta fell behind 20-10 in the fourth set before going on a 5-0 run with kills from May, Fabrizio, and Spano. Davis sent in a kill to make it 23-17, but Geneseo finished up with two more kills. 

Fabrizio led the team with 11 kills and tallied 12 digs., while May added nine. Spano finished with seven kills and four blocks. Gerace led the team with 14 assists, while Alt recorded 12. Annalisa Alicea (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) led the team with 15 digs, and Moller grabbed 12.

Geneseo's Rossi tallied a match-high 16 kills, while Madison Gamberg had seven blocks. Alexandra Driesen made 25 assists, and Cecila Dignan had 22 digs.

Oneonta hosts Brockport on Sat. Oct. 10 at 1 p.m. in Dewar Arena.
