Brockport Sweeps Oneonta in SUNYAC Play

ONEONTA, N.Y. - Brockport's Jordan Thompson recorded a match-high 23 kills to defeat the Oneonta women's volleyball team 3-0 on Saturday afternoon on SUNYAC play. The Red Dragons (2-13, 0-4 SUNYAC) fought two close first-set losses of 25-22 and 25-23 before falling 25-15 in the third set.

The opening two sets were back-and-forth affairs, with neither side taking a commanding lead. The Golden Eagles took a 13-11 lead following a kill from Alexis Sison before the Red Dragons used a 3-0 run with kills by Isabella Fabrizio (Highland Mills, NY/Cornwall) and Katie Spano (Dryden, NY/Dryden) to go up by one. Two more ties followed until kills from Layla Alt (Shullsburg, WI/Shullsburg) and Spano made it 17-15. Oneonta held a slight lead, and Ashanti Davis (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Hendrick Hudson) and Gianna May (Baldwinsville, NY/Baldwinsville) grabbed kills to push the advantage to 20-18. Brockport then went on a 4-1 span to retake the lead at 22-21. Colleen McCabe (Rockville Centre, NY/Oceanside) and Davis blocked an attack from Sison to tie, but the Golden Eagles took the following three points for the set win.

The second set went off similarly, and Oneonta went up 9-8 following an ace from Annalisa Alicea (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington). The teams tied seven times until two straight points by the Red Dragons made it 17-15. The Golden Eagles responded with a 3-0 span to take a one-point lead, but Davis blocked an attack to tie 18-18. Oneonta took a 22-21 lead after a Fabrizio kill and Spano block, but Brockport earned the following three points with kills by Thompson and Sison. A Golden Eagles' service error made it 24-23, but a final kill from Sison put Brockport up 2-0.

The Golden Eagles jumped to a 14-6 lead in the third set as Oneonta struggled to find its offense. Fabrizio and Spano tallied kills to cut the lead to 15-9. Oneonta pulled within four following kills by McCabe and Fabrizio. Brockport then used a 5-0 span to lead 21-11. Oneonta got within nine, but Brockport prevented any comebacks to record the sweep.

Fabrizio led the team with seven kills, while Spano had six and four blocks. Alt made 20 assists, while Anna Moller (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach Senior High School) tallied 17 digs.

Oneonta continues their homestand by hosting Delhi on Wed. Oct. 11 at 6 p.m.
