Field Hockey Shuts Out Morrisville, 8-0

Two Red Dragons Record First Collegiate Goals

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta field hockey team recorded a season-high eight goals and kept Morrisville scoreless in their conference victory, Wednesday afternoon. Senior Molly Geyer (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) and junior Brooke Santos (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) both recorded their first career goals in the win. Graduate student Morgan Fleming (Harpursville, N.Y./Harpursville) recorded a hat trick and senior Michaela Maniscalco (Northport, N.Y./Northport) finished with one goal and three assists as the Red Dragons improved to 3-5 on the season and 1-1 in the SUNYAC while the Mustangs moved to 0-7 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

The Red Dragons got on the board a minute and a half into the contest when senior Abigail Ricottilli (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) passed inside the shooting circle to Fleming for the goal. Midway through the first, the Red Dragons extended the lead after Maniscalco fired the ball into the circle and senior Carly O'Connor (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) redirected the ball into the cage. Fleming made it a three-goal game before the end of the first period after she dove to get her own rebound and beat the Morrisville goalie on the right side of the cage.

Oneonta added two more in the second period for a five-goal halftime lead. Geyer scored her first collegiate goal after she fought off a defender to receive Maniscalco's pass inside the shooting circle and scored on the left side of the cage. Fleming hit the hat trick with 10 minutes left in the first half when she had her shot blocked by a Mustang defender, but when Morrisville tried to pass the ball out Fleming stole the clear and ripped it into the cage.

The Red Dragons scored the last three goals in the third period. From a penalty corner, freshman Alexandra Howell (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) received the ball and passed to Maniscalco for a floating shot that got through a couple defenders for the goal. Two minutes later, Ricottilli entered the shooting circle from the baseline and sent a pass to the other side of the circle to O'Connor for her second goal of the game. Santos scored her first career goal, and last of the game, on a backhanded shot off a centering pass from Maniscalco.

Sophomore Maura Leib (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse Minoa) started the game for the Red Dragons and finished with one save. Sophomore Chelsea Dodenhoff (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip) was in the cage for the second half and recorded a save. Jenn Gutierrez had six saves for the Mustangs.

Oneonta outshot Morrisville 21-3 and had an 11-0 advantage on penalty corners.

The Red Dragons are back in action Saturday when they host Ramapo at 2 pm.
