Geneseo Second Half Run Downs Oneonta

GENESEO, N.Y. - The Oneonta women's lacrosse team was outscored 10-2 in the second half as the Red Dragons dropped a 16-7 decision to Geneseo on Friday afternoon. Junior Lauren Mancini (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) netted a hat trick as Oneonta falls to 3-7 overall and 2-2 in the SUNYAC. Geneseo rises to 8-3 and 5-0 in the conference.

The Knights scored two quick goals from Megan Cook and Maira Brennan to take a 2-0 lead. At 7:26, Mancini took a free position shot that goalkeeper Maggie Rosachi saved. Rosachi stopped a senior Megan Foiles (Pearl River, NY/Pearl River) attempt, but Oneonta finally broke through when Mancini found the back of the net at 6:52. Foiles then scored before the end of the first quarter to make it 2-2.

Geneseo won the draw control to start the second quarter, but sophomore Mason Benvenuto (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) caused a turnover and picked up the ground ball. Foiles dished off to Mancini, who gave Oneonta a 3-2 lead. The Knights responded with two goals on back-to-back draw control wins, but junior Jaclyn Jackowski (Commack, NY/Commack) netted a goal on a free position at 9:58. Cook scored to bring the Geneseo lead to 5-4, and then Mancini tallied her third goal off a Benvenuto assist to tie. Cook added one more score with under a minute in the first half to take its final lead.

The Knights rolled out four straight goals to start the second half before junior Margaret Byrne (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) broke the streak to cut the lead to 10-6.

Geneseo continued to build its lead in the fourth and took a ten-point lead following Cook's fifth goal. Jackowski scored once more with 17 seconds left for Oneonta's last goal.

Junior Courtney Gallagher (Montrose, NY/Hendrick Hudson) made 13 saves in goal, while Rosachi made six for Geneseo.

Oneonta returns home to host Potsdam on Wed. Apr. 12 at 4 p.m. on Red Dragon Field.
