ONEONTA, N.Y. -Â New Paltz's Alyssa Indelicato netted the game-winning overtime goal with three seconds left to give the Hawks a 14-13 win over Oneonta on Wednesday afternoon. Despite the loss, the Red Dragons (5-10, 4-5 SUNYAC) secure the sixth seed in the SUNYAC Tournament, while the Hawks (9-6, 5-4 SUNYAC) take the fifth seed.
New Paltz jumped out to an early 4-1 lead, but Oneonta evened things up to set the tone for a closely matched game. Sophomore Miranda Murray (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) netted a goal at 6:34, and then junior Marissa Evans (Jamesville, NY/LaFayette) found the back of the net less than a minute later to cut the lead to 4-3. Camryn Ryder gave New Paltz a two-point lead before Oneonta rattled off four straight goals from junior Lauren Mancini (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place), sophomore Lindsey Townes (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown), and Murray to end the first quarter with a 7-5 advantage.
The action slowed down in the second quarter, with the Hawks adding two goals from Kaitlyn Shaw to tie 7-7 heading into halftime.Â
New Paltz and Oneonta provided an even stat line in the second half and went back and forth in scoring. Junior Margaret Byrne (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) scored at 14:05, and then sophomore Elizabeth Doherty (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) gave the Red Dragons a 9-8 lead at 8:32. The Hawks answered with two consecutive goals before Bryne scored on a free-position attempt at 1:37 to tie at 10-10.
The teams traded leads in the fourth quarter, and two goals from sophomore Cassidy Moore (Hampton Bays, NY/Hampton Bays) gave Oneonta a 13-12 lead with five minutes remaining. Morgan Atwater scored for the Hawks at 3:10 to force overtime.Â
Oneonta had a couple of chances in extra time, and junior Courtney Gallagher (Montrose, NY/Hendrick Hudson) made a clutch save to give the Red Dragons possession. New Paltz caused a turnover, and Atwater picked up Indelicato on a fast break and chipped the shot past the goalkeeper.Â
Murray led Oneonta with four points on two goals and two assists, while Mancini recorded the hat trick. Moore, Evans, and Byrne each scored two goals. Moore also won seven draw controls. Gallagher made 15 saves in goal.Â
Atwater and Shaw each tallied four goals, while Maddie Gillis and Shannon Brosan dished out three assists. Goalkeeper Gabriella Tommaso made nine stops.Â
Oneonta next plays Oswego in the first round of the SUNYAC Tournament on Sat. Apr. 29 at 4 p.m.
