ONEONTA, N.Y. -Â Sophomore Cassidy Moore (Hampton Bays, NY/Hampton Bays) recorded seven points on four goals and three assists with five draw controls as the Oneonta women's lacrosse team dropped a 16-12 decision to Oswego on Saturday afternoon. The Lakers move to 12-3 overall and 7-1 in the SUNYAC, while the Red Dragons fall to 5-9 and 4-4 in the conference.Â
Oswego netted four unanswered goals in the opening six minutes of play, with Isabella Lembo scoring three. At 7:53, Moore picked up sophomore Mason Benvenuto (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) to cut the lead to 4-1. The Lakers added two more goals in the first quarter to take a five-point lead.
Oneonta struggled to maintain possession in the second, and Oswego's Shae McConnell and Sela Wiley put two more on the board to go ahead 8-1. The Lakers won the following draw control, but junior Madison Viera (Hopewell Junction, NY/Arlington) caused a turnover and scooped up the ground ball. Freshman Olivia McCabe (Latham, NY/Shaker) dished off to junior Ana Stiso (Latham, NY/Shaker), who scored from short range to make it 8-2 at 9:25. Oswego tacked on a free-position goal at 8:49, but Oneonta responded with three straight goals from junior Lauren Mancini (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place), freshman Lindsey Townes (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown), and junior Marissa Evans (Jamesville, NY/LaFayette). A final score from Madison Davis with 20 seconds remaining put it 10-5 heading into halftime.
The Lakers opened on a 4-0 run to start the third quarter, with Lembo finding the back of the net three more times. Townes tacked on a free-position goal at 6:26, and then Evans scored less than a minute later to make it 14-7. Oneonta added goals from Moore and McCabe with under a minute left in the third to cut the lead to six.Â
Moore scored three goals in the fourth as Oneonta outscored Oswego 4-1 in the final frame. The early deficit proved too much as the Red Dragons had little time to complete a comeback.Â
