PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -Â Junior Lauren Mancini (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) scored the game-winning goal in overtime to give the Oneonta women's lacrosse team a 12-11 win on Wednesday afternoon. The Red Dragons shut out the Cardinals 5-0 in the fourth quarter and move to 5-8 overall and 4-3 in the SUNYAC, while the Cardinals fall to 5-8 and 1-6 in the conference.Â
After A Plattsburgh turnover, Oneonta's Mason Benvenuto (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) found the back of the net at 13:04 to take a 1-0 lead. Mancini then scored on a free-position shot 30 seconds later. The Cardinals managed three shots on goal afterward, but junior goalkeeper Courtney Gallagher (Montrose, NY/Hendrick Hudson) made three stops before Emma McLaughlin finally broke through to make it 2-1. Mancini answered at 1:54 to give the Red Dragons a two-score lead. Plattsburgh scored again with 37 seconds left to cut it to 3-2 heading into the second quarter.
The Cardinals netted two unanswered goals to start the second and took their first lead at 4-3. After Mancini won the draw control, Benvenuto passed to junior Margaret Byrne (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) to tie 4-4. Plattsburgh then closed the half on a 5-0 run to lead 9-4 at the break.Â
McLaughlin scored early in the third in a free position, and it was at 5:45 when Mancini added her third goal of the game to cut the lead to 10-5. The Cardinals scored at 1:13, but Mancini scored again with 13 seconds to make it a five-score game.
Oneonta looked to make a comeback in the fourth, with sophomore Cassidy Moore (Hampton Bays, NY/Hampton Bays) causing a turnover after Plattsburgh won the opening draw control. The Red Dragons eventually scored, with Benvenuto firing in goal at 10:26. Moore tallied a score at 7:20 to make it 11-8, and the Red Dragons continued to have chances. An Oneonta free position led to a Moore goal at 4:26 to bring the score within three.
After two-straight free-position attempts, Oneonta broke through at 2:02 following a fifth goal from Mancini. Moore won the ensuing draw control, and the Red Dragons tied 11-11 with 1:21 remaining when Moore scored on a Marissa Evans (Jamesville, NY/LaFayette) assist. Oneonta had one final shot from Evans that sailed wide, and overtime was in the works.Â
Plattsburgh won the draw control to start extra time but turned the ball over soon after. A yellow card on the Cardinals gave the Red Dragons the advantage and Mancini netted the game-winner at 4:29 to give Oneonta the victory.Â
Mancini finished with a career-high six goals, while Moore and Benvenuto each had two goals. Moore also had four ground balls, five caused turnovers, and four draw controls. Evans finished with a game-high three assists. Â
Gallagher finished with eight saves in goal.Â
Cynthia Barnosky led the Cardinals with three goals and two assists, while Lindsay Guzzetta had two goals and three assists. Lilla Nease made 16 saves.Â
Oneonta returns home on Sat. Apr. 22Â to host Oswego at 3 p.m. on Red Dragon Field.Â
