ONEONTA, N.Y. -Â The Golden Eagles took a 5-2 first-quarter lead that held as Brockport won 15-11 over the Oneonta women's lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons fall to 4-9 overall and 3-4 in the SUNYAC, while the Golden Eagles move to 6-6 and 4-2 in the conference.Â
Brockport's Cassidy Burnash assisted on the opening two Golden Eagles' goals from Brooke Beetow and Alayna Foos to take a 2-0 lead within the first five minutes. Haley Chamberlain found the back of the net at 7:14, and then Beetow scored again at 4:20. Burnash picked up Julia Quinlain for Brockport's fifth unanswered goal.
Senior Megan Foiles (Pearl River, NY/Pearl River) won the following draw control, and the ball went to sophomore Ellie Downey (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) who picked up junior Marissa Evans (Jamesville, NY/LaFayette) for Oneonta's first goal. Evans' then caused a Brockport turnover, picked up the ground ball, and eventually scored at 1:41 to make it 5-2 heading into the second.Â
Foiles took the draw control to start the second quarter, and the Red Dragons scored soon after from junior Margaret Byrne (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington). Brockport responded with two scores before sophomore Miranda Murray (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) netted a straight-on goal at 9:17. Oneonta closed out with two goals from junior Lauren Mancini (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) to cut the lead to 8-6 heading into halftime.Â
The Red Dragons pulled within one following a quick goal from Foiles at 14:23 in the third. Quinlan and Burnash gave the Golden Eagles a three-point lead before Foiles scored to make it 10-8. Oneonta found some momentum and added three more goals in the quarter to make it 12-11.Â
Oneonta could not carry over into the fourth, and Brockport shut out the Red Dragons 3-0. The Golden Eagles continued to win the draw controls, and Red Dragons' turnovers prevented a comeback.Â
Evans recorded a hat trick with three goals, four groundballs, and two caused turnovers. Mancini and Foiles each tallied two goals.Â
Junior Courtney Gallagher (Montrose, NY/Hendrick Hudson) made ten saves in goal.Â
Oneonta next travels to face Plattsburgh on Wed. Apr. 19 at 4 p.m. Â
