Red Dragons Open SUNYAC Play With Win Over Fredonia

FREDONIA, N.Y. - Six Oneonta women's lacrosse team members scored in double digits as the Red Dragons defeated Fredonia 17-6 in the SUNYAC opener. Oneonta moves to 2-4 overall and 1-0 in the conference, while Fredonia falls to 5-5 and 0-1 in the SUNYAC. 

The Red Dragons never trailed and took a 3-0 lead in the first quarter following goals from Marissa Evans (Jamesville, NY/LaFayette), Megan Foiles (Pearl River, NY/Pearl River), and Ellie Downey (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon). Fredonia's Erin Woods broke the run by scoring on a free position shot at 7:25, but Evans answered 40 seconds later by scoring a free position goal to make it 4-1. Woods scored again, but senior Nicolette Lospitalier (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) netted a goal from a Foiles' pass to give Oneonta a three-goal lead heading into the second quarter.

Goals from Mason Benvenuto (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) and Downey put the Red Dragons ahead 7-2 early in the second. Foiles scored again at 7:43, and then Lauren Mancini (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) pushed the lead to six after an Oneonta draw control. The Red Dragons headed into halftime with a 10-3 lead when Foiles netted a free position goal at 2:29. 

Foiles carried over into the second half with the opening goal, and Downey followed with her third goal to grab the hat trick. The Blue Devils scored at 11:06, but Foiles rattled off two straight goals to build a comfortable Red Dragons' lead. 

Fredonia scored two in the final quarter, but Oneonta closed the game on a 3-0 run with scores from Benvenuto, Mancini, and Lospitalier. 

Foiles led the team with nine points on six goals and three assists. She also had four groundballs, and three caused turnovers. Downey played both sides of the field with three goals on four shot attempts, five groundballs, and five caused turnovers. Evans, Lospitalier, Benvenuto, and Mancini each had two goals. 

Junior Courtney Gallagher (Montrose, NY/Hendrick Hudson) made 11 saves in goal. 

Woods led Fredonia with four goals. Goalkeeper Emily Carr made 14 saves. 

Oneonta next travels to face Rochester on Fri. Mar. 31 at 4 p.m.
