CLAREMONT, CA -Â The Oneonta women's lacrosse team had nine different goal scorers but fell 21-13 to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Sunday afternoon. The Red Dragons now fall to 1-2 overall, while the Athenas move to 3-1.Â
It was an even first quarter as Oneonta took a 2-1 lead after back-to-back goals from junior Margaret Byrne (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) and sophomore Cassidy Moore (Hampton Bays, NY/Hampton Bays) in the sixth minute. Claremont found the back of the net following an Oneonta turnover when Hannah Conte scored at 5:18. Junior Lauren Mancini (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) scored off a pass from junior Jaclyn Jackowski (Commack, NY/Commack) with under a minute to play, but the Athenas netted one more goal to make it 3-3 heading into the second quarter.
Claremont's Rachel Leonardi scored following the draw control, and Oneonta followed with a women-up goal at 12:42 from senior Megan Foiles (Pearl River, NY/Pearl River). The Athenas answered by scoring five straight goals to push the lead to 9-4. Moore caused a turnover, and senior Nicolette Lospitalier (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) picked up the ball. Shen then passed to Jackowsi, who scored at 8:52. Claremont responded with two straight goals to take a six-point lead. Foiles kept the Red Dragons in with two free-position goals before the half, making it 12-7.Â
A pair of goals from sophomore Mason Benvenuto (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) and Foiles cut the Athenas' lead to 14-10. Claremont added another goal, but a Lospitalier score with 57 seconds remaining made it 15-11 heading into the fourth.Â
Sophomore Ellie Downey (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) brought the game within three following a score at 14:23. Claremont then rattled off three straight goals before sophomore Miranda Murray (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) found the back of the net on a woman-down situation to make it 18-13. The Athenas went on the score three more times.Â
Foiles recorded the hat trick with three goals, two assists, and two caused turnovers. Moore and Mancini each had two goals. Lospitalier grabbed a career-high eight groundballs.Â
Junior Courtney Gallagher (Montrose, NY/Hendrick Hudson) started in goal and had 17 saves with seven ground balls.Â
Claremont's Cate Lewison led the team with five goals and five groundballs, while Grace Minturn had four goals. Kendall Chapko picked up the win and made four saves.
Oneonta continues its California trip when they play Ponoma-Pitzer on Tue. Mar. 14 at 1 p.m. eastern time.Â
