ONEONTA, N.Y. -Â Cortland erupted for 44 second-half points to pick up a 66-58 win over the Oneonta men's basketball team on Friday evening. Oneonta moves to 13-7 overall and 9-4 in the SUNYAC with the loss. Cortland rises to 15-6 and 10-4 in the conference.Â
"We played tough in the first half and however, we were not able to sustain the same effort to start the second half and Cortland went on a big run," said head coach Cameron Conover. "We were able to fight back to within two points, but ran out of gas in the end."
After Cortland's Kareem Lubin made a three-pointer to take a 5-4 lead, Oneonta went on a 7-0 run with five points from sophomore Graham Wooden (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) to go ahead 11-5. Oneonta built its lead up to seven following layups from Michael Ortale Jr. (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central) and Frankie Williams (Bronx, NY/Fannie Lou). A Riley McEvoy triple and an Aaron Coston layup cut the Oneonta lead to 17-15 at 6:24. Tyler Harts (Queens, NY/Sewanaka) scored inside to put Oneonta up by four, and then a Wooden trey at 4:12 made it 24-17. Lubin drained another three-pointer before the end of the half, but Caleb Brown (Brooklyn, NY/Uncommon Charter) split free throws to make it 27-22 at the break.
Cortland opened the second half on a 6-0 run to take a one-point lead at 16:55. After an Ortale free throw, Cortland rolled on a 13-0 span capped off with a Kendall Arcuri triple. Oneonta was able to use an 8-0 with baskets from Williams, Daniel Derice (Tampa, FL/Wesley Chapel), and Elijah Castillo (Bronx, NY/St. Raymonds) to bring the game within six points. Williams scored a layup, and then Wooden hit a triple at 5:17 to cut the lead to 50-47. Another Wooden three-pointer with 3:44 made it a two-point game, but a Cortland 9-1 run put the home team ahead.Â
Oneonta brought the game within five points, but Cortland converted its free throws in the final minute.Â
Wooden finished with a team-high 16 points with four three-pointers. Derice added 12 points with eight rebounds and a block. Ortale led the team with 11 boards.
Coston scored 27 points, while Austin Grunder added 15 points and eight rebounds.Â
Oneonta plays No. 13 Oswego State on Sat. Feb. 4 at 4 p.m.
